Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I drove faster than I ever had in my life.

The moment we escaped the warehouse, I only had one thought.

Lily.

I didn’t care about the answers anymore.

I didn’t care about the secrets.

I didn’t care about Vanessa.

I needed my daughter safe.

But when I arrived at my sister’s house, Lily wasn’t there.

My heart stopped.

My sister rushed outside.

“Ethan.””

“Where is she?””

Her face changed.

“She left.””

The world went quiet.

“What?””

“She said she wanted to show me something.””

“When?””

“Ten minutes ago.””

I looked around.

“Who took her?””

“Nobody.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Where is my daughter?””

A small voice responded.

“Daddy?””

I almost collapsed.

“Lily?””

“I’m sorry.””

My hands shook.

“Where are you?””

“I’m with Vanessa.””

Everything inside me froze.

“Put Vanessa on the phone.””

There was silence.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She’s safe.””

“You took my daughter?””

“No.””

“Then why is she with you?””

“Because she came to me.””

I looked at my sister.

Confusion covered her face.

“Why would Lily go to you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, Lily spoke.

“Daddy, I found something.””

My voice softened.

“What did you find?””

“Mommy’s box.””

I closed my eyes.

The hidden room.

The files.

The key.

Everything connected.

“Lily, listen to me. Stay away from Vanessa.””

“But Daddy…”

Her voice cracked.

“Mommy trusted her.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa became silent.

Then she said quietly:

“Ethan, you need to hear the truth.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where are you?””

“Your old house.””

My heart sank.

The house where Lily’s mother and I lived before the accident.

The house we sold after she died.

“Why are you there?””

“Because your wife left something behind.””

I drove there immediately.

When I arrived, the front door was open.

Vanessa was standing inside.

Lily was beside her, holding an old wooden box.

I rushed forward.

“Lily!””

She ran into my arms.

I held her tightly.

“You scared me.””

“I’m sorry, Daddy.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You don’t get to take her anywhere.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I know.””

That answer surprised me.

She looked exhausted.

Not dangerous.

Just broken.

“I owe you the truth.””

I didn’t respond.

She opened the wooden box.

Inside were letters.

Dozens of them.

“All these years,” Vanessa said, “I thought your wife hated me.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because she discovered what I had done.””

My expression hardened.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“I made a mistake.””

The room became quiet.

Then she continued.

“Six years ago, I was the one who introduced your wife to the people she was investigating.””

I stared at her.

“What people?””

“The same people who are looking for Lily now.””

My hands tightened.

“Why would you do that?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I thought they could help me.””

“Help you with what?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“My own daughter.””

I froze.

“You have a daughter?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She was sick.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

Vanessa looked at the letters.

“Everything.””

She opened one.

Then handed it to me.

The handwriting was my wife’s.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*Vanessa is not your enemy. She was manipulated too.*

I looked up.

Vanessa whispered:

“Your wife knew the truth before she died.””

I read the next sentence.

And my entire understanding of the accident changed.

*Lily was never the target. I was.*
