Chapter 1: The Bridal Suite Door
Five minutes before I was supposed to say “I do,” I found my six-year-old daughter sobbing in the bridal suite while my fiancée stood over her holding pieces of her torn pink dress.
I thought the hardest moment of my wedding day would be seeing Lily walk down the aisle without her mother beside her.
I was wrong.
The hardest moment was realizing the woman I was about to marry had been hurting the little girl I promised to protect.
The ceremony hall was already filled with guests.
The flowers were arranged.
The music was ready.
Everyone kept telling me how perfect the day looked.
But I couldn’t find Lily.
My daughter was supposed to sit in the front row, holding a small basket of white petals before the ceremony began.
Instead, her chair was empty.
“Have you seen Lily?”” I asked my best friend, Daniel, while adjusting my suit jacket.
He looked around nervously.
“No. I thought she was with Vanessa.””
Those words made my stomach tighten.
“With Vanessa?””
“Yeah. She said she needed to help Lily get ready.””
I forced a smile.
“Okay. I’ll check upstairs.””
The bridal suite hallway was quiet.
Too quiet.
I walked past the decorations, past the framed wedding photos, past the guests who were laughing downstairs.
Then I heard it.
A small, broken sound.
A child crying.
My heart stopped.
“Lily?””
The crying got louder.
I reached the bridal suite door and grabbed the handle.
It was locked.
“Lily? Open the door.””
No answer.
Then I heard Vanessa’s voice.
Cold.
Sharp.
“Stop crying. You always have to make everything about you.””
My hand froze on the door.
That wasn’t the Vanessa I knew.
Not the woman who kissed Lily’s forehead every morning.
Not the woman who promised me she wanted to be a mother figure.
I pushed the door open.
And my entire world changed.
Lily was standing against the wall.
Her beautiful pink dress was ripped from the shoulder almost to the waist.
One hand covered her cheek.
Tears rolled down her face.
And Vanessa was standing only a few feet away, holding pieces of the torn fabric.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Lily saw me.
“Daddy!””
She ran toward me.
But Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“Get back here.””
Something inside me snapped.
“LET HER GO!””
My voice shook the room.
Vanessa turned around.
Her expression changed when she saw me.
“Ethan, wait—”
I crossed the room in seconds.
I pulled Lily away from her and lifted my daughter into my arms.
She buried her face against my chest.
“She hit me, Daddy.””
The words were barely a whisper.
But they destroyed me.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“She’s lying.””
Lily held onto my jacket.
“I’m not.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She was throwing a tantrum because she didn’t want to listen.””
I looked down at Lily’s torn dress.
Then at her red cheek.
“You did this?””
Vanessa sighed like I was the unreasonable one.
“She refused to stay upstairs during the ceremony.””
I stared at her.
“Why would my daughter stay upstairs?””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Because today is supposed to be about us.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“My daughter is part of my life.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Exactly. That’s the problem.””
The room went silent.
Lily looked up at me.
Her tiny fingers tightened around my shirt.
“She said something else.””
I knelt down.
“What did she say, sweetheart?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Fear crossed her face.
Then she whispered:
“She said after today, you wouldn’t need me anymore.””
Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.
“Stop making things up.””
I stood between them.
“What else did she tell you?””
Lily reached into the torn pocket of her dress.
Her hands were shaking.
She pulled out my phone.
I stared at it.
My phone.
The one I had been searching for all morning.
“Where did you get that?””
Lily looked down.
“She took it from your room.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Her voice wasn’t angry anymore.
It was scared.
I moved Lily behind me.
“Why are you afraid of my phone?””
“I’m not.””
“Then why did you just try to take it?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Lily pointed at the screen.
“I pressed the red button when she came into my room.””
My blood ran cold.
“What red button?””
She looked at me.
“The recording button.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“No.””
I unlocked the phone.
An audio file was open.
Created twenty minutes earlier.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at me.
And for the first time since I met her…
I saw fear in her eyes.
I pressed play.
The room filled with her voice.
“Once I marry your father today…”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Lily grabbed my hand.
The recording continued.
“…you’re going somewhere he’ll never find you.””
I felt the world disappear beneath my feet.
May you like
Because suddenly, my wedding day wasn’t about becoming a family.
It was about finding out why my future wife wanted to destroy mine.
