Chapter 6: The Hidden Room

I spent the next hour trying to convince myself that fear was making me imagine things.

That Vanessa wasn’t capable of what I was thinking.

That there had to be another explanation.

But every time I looked at Lily’s torn dress sitting on the chair…

Every time I heard the recording…

Every time I remembered Vanessa’s expression when I found her…

I knew something was wrong.

I took Lily to my sister’s house.

I didn’t explain everything.

I just told her:

“Keep Lily safe.””

My sister looked at my face and didn’t ask questions.

She knew something serious had happened.

After leaving Lily, I returned home alone.

The silver key was in my pocket.

The envelope Marcus gave me was still unopened.

I finally opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

My wife.

Standing beside another woman.

Vanessa.

I stared at it.

They looked younger.

Friends.

Not strangers.

On the back of the photo, my wife had written:

*The person closest to you may be the one who destroys you.*

My hands shook.

Then I found another piece of paper.

An address.

An old warehouse.

And one sentence:

*The truth is where Lily was born.*

I drove there immediately.

The warehouse had been abandoned for years.

Dust covered the floor.

Broken windows let sunlight cut through the darkness.

I searched every corner.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a small metal door behind some old shelves.

A keyhole.

My key.

It fit perfectly.

The door opened.

Inside was a hidden room.

A room someone had tried very hard to hide.

There were files.

Photos.

Documents.

And a small box with Lily’s name written on it.

I opened the first file.

My wife’s handwriting.

My heart stopped.

*If Ethan finds this, it means Vanessa succeeded in getting close to him.*

I read faster.

*I never wanted him involved. I wanted to protect him. But after what happened, I don’t know who I can trust.*

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

Nobody.

Just the wind.

I looked back at the papers.

The next line made my entire body go cold.

*Lily was not supposed to survive.*

I stopped breathing.

I kept reading.

*The people who came after her wanted her gone because they knew what she carried.*

A floorboard creaked.

This time, I wasn’t imagining it.

Someone was inside.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

I grabbed the nearest object.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

“Ethan.””

I turned.

Vanessa stood there.

Her wedding dress was gone.

Her face was cold.

“You should have stayed away.””

I stepped in front of the files.

“How did you find this place?””

She smiled slightly.

“That’s the problem with you.””

She walked closer.

“You always think you’re protecting people.””

My fists tightened.

“You hurt my daughter.””

Her expression changed.

“I was trying to protect her.””

I almost laughed.

“From what?””

Vanessa looked at the file in my hand.

Then at me.

“From the truth.””

The room went silent.

“What truth?””

She took one more step forward.

“The truth about who Lily really is.””

I stared at her.

And then Vanessa said something I never expected.

Something that changed everything I believed about my daughter.

“She isn’t just your wife’s child.””

May you like

She looked directly into my eyes.

“She’s the reason your wife died.””
