Chapter 5: What Lily Remembered
I didn’t sleep.
Not even for a minute.
The note stayed on the kitchen table all night.
Three words.
*Ask your daughter.*
By morning, I had a hundred questions.
But only one mattered.
What did Lily know?
I made breakfast.
I tried to act normal.
But Lily noticed.
She always noticed.
“Daddy?””
I looked up.
“Yeah?””
“You’re scared.””
The honesty of a child hurt more than any lie.
I forced a small smile.
“I’m just tired.””
She stared at me.
“You say that when you don’t want me to worry.””
I put down my fork.
“Lily…”
She reached across the table and touched my hand.
“Are you mad at me?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
“Because Vanessa said bad things happen when kids make trouble.””
I stood immediately.
“Don’t listen to her.””
“But what if she’s right?””
I knelt beside her chair.
“Sweetheart, you could never be the reason something bad happens.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Then why did Mommy hide things?””
The question stopped me.
“How do you know she hid things?””
Lily looked down.
“Because Mommy told me.””
I felt frozen.
“Your mom told you?””
She nodded.
“She said if something happened, I should remember.””
I sat beside her.
“What should you remember?””
Lily hesitated.
Then slowly opened her hand.
Inside was a tiny silver key.
My breath caught.
“Where did you get that?””
“Mommy gave it to me.””
“When?””
She looked confused.
“Before she went away.””
My heart twisted.
“Lily, Mommy didn’t know she was going away.””
“Yes, she did.””
The room went silent.
“What do you mean?””
Lily hugged her rabbit.
“She was crying.””
I couldn’t move.
“She told me she loved me. Then she put this key around my neck and told me never to give it to anyone except Daddy.””
My fingers shook as I took the key.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa found it.””
“When?””
“Last week.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did she do?””
Lily’s voice became smaller.
“She asked me where it opened.””
“And?””
“I said I didn’t know.””
“Then what happened?””
“She got angry.””
I looked at the key.
A tiny symbol was carved into the metal.
A symbol I had never seen before.
My phone suddenly rang.
Marcus.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?””
His voice was tense.
“Ethan, did you find the key?””
I froze.
“How do you know about the key?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because your wife told me about it.””
I gripped the phone.
“You knew?””
“I knew she gave it to Lily.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought the danger was gone.””
“What danger?””
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Vanessa.””
I looked toward the window.
“What does the key open?””
Before Marcus answered, I heard another voice in the background.
A woman’s voice.
A voice I recognized.
“Who are you talking to?””
My blood ran cold.
“Marcus?””
The call went silent.
Then I heard him whisper:
“She found me.””
The line disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
Lily looked at me.
“Daddy?””
I forced myself to breathe.
“Yes?””
She pointed at the key.
“There’s something else Mommy told me.””
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“She said if Vanessa ever found out about the key…”
I leaned closer.
“What?””
Lily looked toward the front door.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Mommy said Vanessa would come back for me.””
