Chapter 11: The Letter My Wife Hid
The police searched the house for hours.
They found evidence of a break-in.
They found fingerprints.
They found the broken window.
But they didn’t find Daniel.
He had vanished.
Like he had prepared for it.
I sat at the kitchen table with the envelope in front of me.
My name was written in my wife’s handwriting.
Ethan.
Just seeing it almost destroyed me.
The officer asked if I wanted to open it later.
I said no.
I needed answers now.
When the room was finally quiet, I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Short.
Simple.
But every word felt like my wife was sitting across from me.
*Ethan,*
*If this letter reaches you, then the people I feared have found Lily.*
I stopped reading.
My hand covered my mouth.
*I need you to know something. Lily was never a mistake. She was never a burden. She was never the reason my life became difficult.*
I looked at Lily.
She was sleeping on the couch, exhausted.
*She was the reason I kept going.*
My eyes filled with tears.
I continued.
*There are people who believe they own the truth about her. They believe they can decide her future. They are wrong.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She was sitting silently across the room.
*Vanessa made choices she regrets. But she was not the person who destroyed us.*
Vanessa lowered her head.
*The person you trusted most was the person I feared.*
My heart stopped.
Daniel.
The letter continued.
*He was patient. He was kind. He waited until everyone believed he belonged.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“Daniel.””
She nodded.
“He was always close.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She wiped her eyes.
“Because your wife made me promise.””
I stared at her.
“She trusted you?””
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“She trusted that I could still choose the right thing.””
Silence followed.
Then Lily woke up.
“Daddy?””
I immediately went to her.
“Yes?””
“Is Mommy angry?””
My chest tightened.
“No.””
“But she left secrets.””
I sat beside her.
“She was trying to protect you.””
Lily looked at the letter.
“Did she know?””
“Know what?””
“That Daniel was bad?””
I froze.
“How do you know Daniel?””
Her face changed.
“I saw him before.””
“When?””
She looked scared.
“Before Mommy died.””
The room went silent.
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“Lily, what do you mean?””
She hugged her rabbit.
“Mommy told him to leave.””
“Where?””
“Our house.””
“When?””
“The night before the accident.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“I forgot.””
“You forgot?””
She nodded.
“Mommy told me not to talk about it because she didn’t want me scared.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked shocked too.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
I opened it.
There was a picture attached.
My blood turned cold.
It was a photograph of Lily.
Taken tonight.
While she slept.
The message below said:
*You should have protected her better.*
Another message appeared.
*Tomorrow, you’ll learn why your wife really died.*
Then a final message.
*Come alone. Or you lose the only thing she left behind.*
I looked at Lily.
Then at the screen.
Vanessa stood.
“Don’t go.””
I looked at her.
“He has my daughter.””
“No.””
“He has something connected to my wife.””
She shook her head.
“He wants you angry.””
I stared at the message.
Because she was right.
Daniel wanted me to react.
But I had already lost one person I loved.
I wasn’t losing another.
I grabbed my jacket.
Vanessa stepped in front of me.
“Ethan.””
“What?””
Her voice was quiet.
“If you go after him…”
May you like
She looked at Lily.
“…make sure you come back.””
