Chapter 4: The Stranger at Midnight

I almost deleted the message.

For five minutes, I stared at the screen, telling myself it was a cruel joke.

Someone trying to reopen an old wound.

Someone trying to use my wife’s memory against me.

But then I looked at Lily sleeping upstairs.

Her tiny hand was wrapped around the corner of her blanket.

The same way she used to hold her mother’s finger when she was a baby.

And I knew I couldn’t ignore it.

Not anymore.

I waited until Lily was asleep, then quietly left the house.

The meeting place was an old twenty-four-hour diner on the edge of town.

The kind of place where nobody asked questions.

The parking lot was nearly empty.

A single light flickered above the entrance.

I sat in my car for several minutes before walking inside.

A man was sitting in the corner booth.

Early forties.

Dark jacket.

A nervous expression.

When he saw me, he immediately stood.

“Ethan?””

I stopped.

“How do you know my name?””

He looked around before sitting back down.

“My name is Marcus.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Your wife trusted me.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Nobody had said those words in years.

“Who are you?””

“I worked with her.””

“My wife didn’t work after Lily was born.””

“She did.””

I stared at him.

“No. She didn’t.””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“She wanted you to believe that.””

My hands tightened.

“Explain.””

He reached into his bag and placed a small envelope on the table.

“I found this after the accident.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?””

“Something your wife wanted you to have if anything happened to her.””

My heart started pounding.

“Why didn’t I get it six years ago?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because someone removed it.””

The diner suddenly felt too quiet.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said one word.

“Vanessa.””

I pushed back from the table.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

I remembered Vanessa’s questions.

The missing photograph.

The recording.

Her desperation to control my wedding day.

Marcus watched my face carefully.

“She didn’t enter your life by accident.””

I looked at him.

“What are you saying?””

“She knew your wife.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re lying.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Your wife discovered Vanessa was involved with something dangerous.””

“What kind of something?””

Before he answered, his phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

The color drained from his face.

“What?””

I leaned forward.

“What happened?””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“We have to leave.””

“Why?””

“She knows you’re here.””

My blood went cold.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He just grabbed the envelope.

Then I saw her.

Outside the diner.

A black SUV parked near the entrance.

The same one I had seen outside my wedding venue earlier that morning.

Vanessa wasn’t inside.

But someone was watching.

Marcus grabbed my arm.

“Listen carefully. You need to protect Lily.””

I pulled away.

“What does Vanessa want from my daughter?””

His expression changed.

Like he was afraid of the answer.

“She wants what your wife hid.””

“What did my wife hide?””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

“The truth about Lily’s birth.””

I froze.

“My daughter’s birth?””

“She isn’t just the reason your wife kept fighting.””

I stared at him.

“Then what is she?””

Marcus looked toward the window again.

And whispered:

“She is the reason Vanessa destroyed everything.””

When I got home, the lights were off.

I unlocked the door slowly.

“Lily?””

No answer.

My heart dropped.

I ran upstairs.

Her bedroom door was open.

Empty.

“LILY!””

A sound came from behind me.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was standing in the hallway holding her stuffed rabbit.

I rushed to her.

“Where were you?””

She looked confused.

“I heard someone downstairs.””

My blood ran cold.

“Someone was inside?””

She nodded.

“I thought it was you.””

I checked every room.

Nothing was missing.

Nothing was broken.

Except one thing.

The wooden box from my wife’s belongings was sitting on the kitchen table.

Open.

And inside was a note.

Three words.

*Ask your daughter.*

I looked at Lily.

She was watching me.

Confused.

Afraid.

Then she whispered:

“Daddy… Vanessa already asked me that question.””
