Chapter 14: The Final Choice

I didn’t wait.

The moment Daniel looked away, I grabbed Vanessa’s arm.

“Run.””

We moved through the dark hallway.

Behind us, voices echoed.

Men shouting.

Doors opening.

Someone was searching the building.

But we had one advantage.

They didn’t know where we were going.

We reached the old storage area.

Vanessa stopped.

“There’s another exit.””

“How do you know?””

“Your wife showed me.””

I looked at her.

“You came here before?””

She nodded.

“Once.””

“When?””

“The night before the accident.””

My steps stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I met your wife here.””

My anger returned.

“And you never told me?””

“She asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew Daniel was watching.””

The pieces finally connected.

My wife knew.

Vanessa knew.

Everyone knew something except me.

I hated that feeling.

Like my entire life had been built on secrets.

We reached the exit door.

But it was locked.

Vanessa searched the wall.

“There.””

A small metal box.

Inside was a key.

Not the same one Lily had.

A different one.

I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

A note was attached.

My wife’s handwriting.

*For Ethan. Only when Lily is safe.*

My hands shook.

“She left this for me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She believed you would find it.””

A voice came from behind us.

“Unfortunately, you found it too late.””

We turned.

Daniel stood there.

Two men beside him.

I moved in front of Vanessa.

“You’re done.””

Daniel smiled.

“No.””

He looked at the flash drive.

“That belongs to me.””

I laughed.

“Everything belongs to you, doesn’t it?””

His expression hardened.

“You have no idea what’s at stake.””

“No. I know exactly what’s at stake.””

I pointed toward him.

“My daughter.””

For a moment, Daniel said nothing.

Then he looked almost disappointed.

“That’s why you’ll lose.””

“What?””

“You think love makes you stronger.””

He stepped closer.

“It makes you predictable.””

Vanessa suddenly moved.

She grabbed a metal pipe from the floor and swung it toward one of the men.

Chaos erupted.

I ran.

Not away.

Toward Daniel.

He tried to grab the flash drive.

I pulled it away.

We struggled.

Then he whispered something.

Something that made me stop.

“Your wife didn’t die because of me.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“She died because she discovered who Lily’s father really was.””

The words hit like a punch.

“What did you say?””

Daniel pulled away.

“You heard me.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

He laughed.

“Ask Vanessa.””

I turned.

Vanessa’s face had gone completely pale.

That was enough.

I looked at her.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

She couldn’t.

Not immediately.

And that silence destroyed me.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

My voice dropped.

“Tell me what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The truth about Lily’s birth.””

Everything stopped.

The building.

The voices.

The fight.

Everything.

Because the woman I thought I hated…

and the man I trusted…

were both hiding the same truth.

Daniel smiled.

“Now you understand.””

I grabbed Vanessa’s arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You’re going to tell me.””

She nodded slowly.

“I will.””

Then she whispered:

“But not here.””

She looked toward the exit.

“Because if they know what Lily is…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“…they won’t stop until they have her.””
