Chapter 2: The Voice on the Recording

The recording played again.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stared at the phone like it was a weapon pointed directly at her.

Because it was.

Her own voice.

Her own words.

Her own secret.

I held Lily tighter.

“Explain.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Ethan, it’s not what it sounds like.””

I looked at her.

“How does ‘you’re going somewhere he’ll never find you’ sound different?””

Her face hardened.

“She misunderstood.””

Lily immediately shook her head.

“I didn’t.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Lily, be quiet.””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t talk to her like that.””

For years, I had tried to create a peaceful home.

After Lily’s mother passed away, I knew my daughter needed stability.

Vanessa came into our lives slowly.

She brought gifts.

She made pancakes on weekends.

She sat beside Lily during movie nights.

She convinced me she loved my daughter.

Now I wondered if any of it had been real.

I looked at the recording details.

“Why were you in her room?””

Vanessa avoided my eyes.

“I was trying to calm her down.””

“By threatening her?””

“I didn’t threaten her.””

“You ripped her dress.””

Her jaw tightened.

“She wouldn’t cooperate.””

I felt anger rising.

“She’s six years old.””

Vanessa looked away.

“She’s old enough to understand things change.””

Lily pressed against my chest.

“What things?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That silence told me more than any excuse could.

I picked up my phone.

“I’m calling off the ceremony.””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Ethan, don’t be dramatic.””

I almost laughed.

Dramatic.

My daughter was crying.

Her dress was torn.

My fiancée was caught on a recording saying she wanted to send my child away.

And somehow I was the dramatic one.

“You need to leave this room.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Ethan, think carefully.””

The way she said it made me pause.

Not because I believed her.

Because it sounded like a warning.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“You’re choosing her over me.””

I felt something break inside.

“She’s my daughter. There was never a choice.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

The sweet, gentle woman everyone knew disappeared.

“You have no idea what that child has done.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“You think she’s innocent because she cries?””

Lily buried her face in my shoulder.

“Daddy…”

I rubbed her back.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Not anymore.

Vanessa walked toward the door.

Before leaving, she stopped.

“You’re going to regret believing her.””

Then she walked out.

A few seconds later, Daniel entered.

He looked at the torn dress.

Then at Lily.

Then at me.

“What happened?””

I handed him the phone.

He listened.

His face changed slowly.

“Ethan…”

“I know.””

“No. You don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel lowered the phone.

“This isn’t the first time Vanessa has tried to separate Lily from you.””

My stomach dropped.

“What are you talking about?””

He hesitated.

Then reached into his pocket.

“I didn’t want to tell you because I thought I was wrong.””

He pulled out his own phone.

“There’s something you need to see.””

A video appeared on his screen.

It showed Vanessa sitting alone in a café.

Talking to someone.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

Daniel pressed play.

Vanessa’s voice came through.

“I just need a little more time.””

The person across from her said something I couldn’t hear.

Then Vanessa replied:

“Once the wedding happens, Ethan won’t question anything.””

I stared at the screen.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I recorded it three days ago.””

“Why?””

“Because I heard her say your name.””

The video continued.

Vanessa leaned closer to the stranger.

Then she said something that made my blood turn cold.

“She has no idea what her daughter really is.””

I looked at Lily.

My daughter was still holding my hand.

Then I looked back at the screen.

May you like

Because suddenly I wasn’t only asking why Vanessa wanted Lily gone.

I was asking what she knew about my daughter that I didn’t.
