Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Camera

The screen went black.

But my wife’s final words stayed in my head.

*He found me.*

Not they.

Not someone.

Him.

Daniel.

For six years, I had trusted the man who stood beside me at my wedding.

The man who helped me carry my grief.

The man who told me I deserved happiness again.

And all that time, he had been hiding the truth about my wife’s death.

Vanessa stared at the computer.

“He recorded this.””

I nodded.

“Why?””

She stepped closer.

“Because he wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That he controlled the situation.””

My stomach twisted.

I replayed the video.

This time, I watched everything.

Not my wife.

The background.

The reflection in the glass.

And there it was.

A shadow.

A man standing behind the camera.

Holding something in his hand.

A folder.

With a symbol printed on it.

The same symbol on Lily’s key.

I froze.

“Vanessa.””

She looked.

Her face changed.

“That symbol…”

“You’ve seen it?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

She swallowed.

“On Daniel’s documents.””

A noise came from the hallway.

We both turned.

The door slowly opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

Clapping softly.

“Very impressive.””

My body went tense.

“You followed us.””

He smiled.

“You were always predictable, Ethan.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Still asking that question?””

“You ruined everything.””

He laughed quietly.

“No, Vanessa. I revealed what was already broken.””

I moved between them.

“You killed my wife.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I didn’t want her dead.””

My anger exploded.

“But she is.””

He became silent.

Then said:

“She chose Lily.””

I stepped closer.

“And that bothered you?””

“No.””

He looked at the computer.

“It disappointed me.””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

“What is Lily?””

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Fear.

“She is the reason everyone made mistakes.””

“She’s a child.””

“She is more than that.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel sighed.

“You still think your wife was protecting her because she was a mother.””

“Wasn’t she?””

“She was protecting her because she discovered something.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel slowly walked toward the desk.

“Your wife found out Lily was connected to a secret she was never supposed to uncover.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Stop.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You know I’m right.””

I looked between them.

“What secret?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone.

A video.

Another one.

He pressed play.

My wife appeared again.

But this time, she looked terrified.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“If anything happens to me, Ethan needs to know the truth.””

She looked down.

“Lily was born with information hidden inside her medical records.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel paused the video.

“She knew.””

I stared at him.

“What information?””

“That’s what everyone wants.””

I clenched my fists.

“You’re talking about my daughter like she’s an object.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Because you don’t understand.””

“No. I understand enough.””

I moved forward.

“She is a little girl who lost her mother.””

For a second, Daniel looked almost guilty.

Then it disappeared.

“You’re exactly like her.””

“Like who?””

“Your wife.””

The lights suddenly shut off.

The building went completely dark.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Ethan.””

A sound echoed through the hallway.

Footsteps.

More than one person.

Daniel smiled.

“They’re here.””

My heart dropped.

“Who?””

He looked toward the darkness.

“The people your wife was running from.””

May you like

Then he whispered:

“And now they know where Lily is.””
