Chapter 8: The Witness Who Never Died
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my mother's photograph.
I saw the emerald necklace around Vanessa's throat.
And I heard Adrian telling me that everything he had done was for our future.
At six in the morning, Daniel found me sitting at the kitchen island with the original accident report spread across the marble.
"You're going to Versailles," he said.
I nodded.
"Not alone.""
"The message specifically said—"
"I don't care what the message said. Someone tried to kill Mom. I'm not letting you become their next victim.""
We agreed to meet Thomas at a small café near his listed residence.
I deliberately didn't tell Celeste.
If the message was true, I needed to know why my mother had feared her.
At ten thirty, a silver-haired man entered the café.
He wore a dark overcoat and carried a wooden walking stick.
His eyes moved across the room before settling on me.
"Claire Bennett?""
I stood.
"Thomas Whitmore?""
He nodded.
"You look like Eleanor.""
I swallowed.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
He pulled out a chair.
"Because it's true. Your mother had the same expression when she knew someone was lying.""
Daniel sat beside me.
Thomas studied him.
"Daniel. You've grown.""
My brother's expression hardened.
"You knew my mother was murdered.""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"I suspected it.""
"That's not an answer.""
Thomas placed a small envelope on the table.
"Your mother came to me eleven years ago. She had discovered that Adrian was using her designs to finance a secret acquisition.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a bank statement.
Several large transfers had been made from a Moreau International account to an offshore company.
The beneficiary was listed as A.V. Holdings.
Adrian Vale.
"Why would my mother allow him access to the account?"" I asked.
"She didn't. He created the company using forged authorization documents.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Who helped him?""
Thomas looked at me.
"Celeste Moreau.""
My heart sank.
"Why?""
"Because Celeste believed Adrian was the rightful successor to Eleanor's creative empire.""
"That doesn't make sense. Mom left everything to me.""
"After she discovered what Adrian had been doing, yes. But before that, Eleanor had considered making him a partner.""
Thomas paused.
"Then she discovered his real identity.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"His real identity?""
Thomas took a photograph from his coat.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.
Beside her stood a man whose face I recognized from the old hospital photograph.
Robert Vale.
But the woman wasn't Eleanor.
She was Margaret Hart.
Vanessa's mother.
Thomas spoke quietly.
"Adrian was born to Margaret and Robert Vale. But Robert was not his biological father.""
I stared at him.
"Then who was?""
Thomas looked toward the window.
"Eleanor's first husband.""
The café seemed to grow colder.
"My mother was married before?""
"Yes. To a man named James Whitmore.""
Daniel frowned.
"Your brother?""
Thomas nodded.
"My younger brother.""
I looked at the photograph again.
James Whitmore.
My mother's first husband.
Adrian's biological father.
And Thomas's nephew.
The family connections were becoming almost impossible to follow.
"Why did my mother marry him?"" I asked.
"Because she loved him. But James was a gambler. He stole money from her studio and disappeared when she was pregnant.""
I stared at the photograph.
"Adrian?""
Thomas nodded.
"Margaret Hart later raised him with Robert Vale, who believed the child was his. James returned years later and tried to contact Eleanor. She refused.""
"How does Vanessa fit into this?""
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
"Margaret had another child. Vanessa. Her father was Robert Vale.""
I closed my eyes.
So Vanessa and Adrian weren't siblings.
They were connected through their parents, but their biological fathers were different.
"Why did Vanessa hate my mother?""
"Because Margaret told her Eleanor had destroyed her family. She convinced Vanessa that Eleanor had stolen the life they deserved.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's not true.""
"Perhaps not. But resentment doesn't require truth.""
I looked at Thomas.
"Why did Adrian marry me?""
He leaned forward.
"Because Eleanor's inheritance was protected. Adrian believed marrying you would give him access to the Bennett trust.""
I felt physically sick.
"Did he know about the inheritance before our wedding?""
Thomas nodded.
"He knew Eleanor had placed everything in your name. He believed that once you were married, he could gradually convince you to transfer control.""
Eleven years.
Eleven years of carefully calculated affection.
I remembered the first time Adrian proposed.
He had taken me to the restaurant where my mother celebrated her birthdays.
He had held my hands and promised that he wanted to build a family with me.
Had any of it been real?
"Why didn't you stop him?"" I whispered.
Thomas looked devastated.
"Because I helped him.""
Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair fell backward.
"You what?""
Thomas didn't defend himself.
"I gave Adrian access to the original design archive. I believed he wanted to preserve Eleanor's work. When I discovered the theft, I confronted him.""
"And?""
"He threatened to expose my involvement.""
I stared at him.
"Did you help cover up my mother's accident?""
Thomas's hands began shaking.
"No. But I know who ordered it.""
He reached inside his coat and removed a small voice recorder.
"Your mother recorded a conversation three days before she died. I kept a copy because I knew one day someone would come looking for it.""
He pressed play.
Static filled the air.
Then my mother's voice emerged.
"Adrian, I know what you did. I know about the designs, the accounts, and the false documents.""
A man's voice answered.
"Then you should understand why you need to stay quiet.""
My mother spoke again.
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
Then another voice interrupted.
A woman's voice.
"She's never going to give us the shares, Adrian.""
My blood ran cold.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it just hours earlier.
It belonged to Celeste Moreau.
The recording continued.
"Then we make sure she can't stop us.""
Thomas stopped the recorder.
I couldn't breathe.
Daniel stared at him.
"Who else has heard this?""
Thomas looked directly at me.
"Only one other person.""
"Who?""
He leaned closer.
"Vanessa.""
Before I could respond, the café's front window shattered.
A gunshot echoed through the room.
Thomas collapsed.
Daniel dragged me beneath the table.
May you like
And through the broken glass, I saw a familiar figure standing beside a black car.
Celeste Moreau.
