Chapter 10: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead
I stared at the photograph on my phone.
The man had silver hair, sharp cheekbones, and dark eyes that looked strangely familiar.
My eyes.
Beneath the photograph was a name.
*James Whitmore.*
The man my mother had married before I was born.
The man everyone had told me was dead.
"Daniel," I whispered, "look at this.""
My brother took the phone.
His face changed immediately.
"Where did you get this?""
"He transferred one euro into my account.""
Daniel examined the transaction.
"There's a message attached.""
I read it aloud.
"Your mother was protecting you from the wrong man.""
Daniel sat down.
"Claire, I think we need to talk to him.""
I shook my head.
"How can he be alive? Mom told us he disappeared.""
"She told us he abandoned her. That's not necessarily the same thing.""
I looked at the photograph again.
There was something about his expression that made my chest ache.
For thirty-two years, I had wondered whether my father had ever loved me.
Now I was discovering that he might have been watching my life from somewhere in the shadows.
We traced the transfer to a private bank account registered in Switzerland.
The bank couldn't disclose the owner's details, but the transaction reference included a telephone number.
I called.
A man answered after two rings.
"Claire?""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Who is this?""
A long silence followed.
Then he said something I had waited my entire life to hear.
"It's your father, sweetheart.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where have you been?""
His voice cracked.
"Trying to keep you alive.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"No. But I hope you'll give me the chance to explain.""
"Did you know my mother was killed?""
Another silence.
"Yes.""
My knees weakened.
"And you did nothing?""
"I tried to stop it. I was too late.""
Daniel took the phone from me.
"James, this is Daniel. If you're really our father, tell us something only Eleanor would have known.""
The man exhaled.
"Your mother used to hide handwritten notes inside the lining of her sewing machine. She called them her little insurance policies. Claire used to sit beneath her drafting table and fall asleep listening to the machine.""
I remembered.
I remembered the smell of warm fabric, the rhythmic hum, and my mother's hand brushing my hair.
My eyes filled with tears.
Daniel handed the phone back.
"Where can we meet?""
"There's an old restaurant near the Place des Vosges. Tomorrow morning. But Claire, don't bring Celeste.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Why?""
His answer was immediate.
"Because she knows I'm alive.""
The call disconnected.
That evening, we examined every document on the USB drive.
At midnight, Daniel found a hidden audio file.
It was labeled with my mother's initials.
He pressed play.
Eleanor's voice filled the room.
"James, you promised you would never return.""
A man's voice answered.
"I came back because Adrian knows.""
"Then we have no choice. Claire must never know the truth until the trust is secure.""
"What about Daniel?""
"Daniel is safe. He's not involved.""
I looked at my brother.
His face had gone pale.
The recording continued.
James spoke again.
"Eleanor, the child is not the danger. The people around him are.""
My mother began crying.
"He's my husband, James. I thought I could trust him.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
"Who was she talking about?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know.""
My phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
*Adrian knows about the meeting. He's looking for James.*
Another message arrived.
*And Claire, I need to tell you something before tomorrow.*
I called her immediately.
She answered in a whisper.
"He's outside my apartment.""
"Who?""
"Adrian.""
I heard a door slam.
Then Vanessa began crying.
"Claire, he found out I'm carrying something that belongs to your mother.""
"What?""
"The original death certificate.""
My stomach tightened.
"Your mother's?""
"No. Eleanor's first child.""
I froze.
"What child?""
Vanessa whispered:
"Adrian isn't James Whitmore's only secret.""
Then I heard Adrian's voice in the background.
"Give me the document, Vanessa.""
A struggle followed.
May you like
The phone hit the floor.
And then the call ended.
