Chapter 7: The Man in the Photograph
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Adrian stood beside the dresser, staring at the photograph on his phone.
Daniel held my mother's letter.
And I stood between them, trying to understand how a single photograph could turn eleven years of marriage into a complete stranger's life.
"Who is the man?"" I asked.
Adrian didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Adrian, who is standing beside my mother?""
He turned the phone away.
"Give me a minute.""
"No. You've had eleven years.""
Daniel placed the letter on the dresser.
"Claire, look at this.""
The handwriting was unmistakably my mother's.
My darling Claire,
There are truths I hoped you would never need to know. But if Adrian has discovered the photograph, then the people responsible for your father's disappearance have finally begun moving against you.
I stopped reading.
"My father?""
I had grown up believing my father had died when I was three.
My mother rarely discussed him. Whenever I asked, she would kiss my forehead and tell me that some people left before they understood what they were abandoning.
I had assumed he was simply gone.
Now I wondered whether she had been protecting me from something much worse.
Daniel continued reading.
The man in the photograph is Thomas Whitmore. He was the person I trusted most in business. He helped me establish the original Bennett studio, and he was present when Adrian was born.
I looked at Adrian.
"Thomas Whitmore?""
His jaw tightened.
"He's my godfather.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not anymore.""
Adrian suddenly grabbed the letter.
"Enough!""
He tore the page in half.
I gasped.
"Are you insane?""
He threw the pieces onto the carpet.
"Your mother was sick. She was paranoid. She invented stories because she couldn't accept that her company was failing.""
Daniel stepped toward him.
"Her company wasn't failing. You were stealing from it.""
Adrian shoved him.
Daniel stumbled against the wardrobe.
I immediately moved between them.
"Don't touch my brother!""
Adrian looked at me.
For a moment, I saw the man I had married. The man who used to fall asleep with his head in my lap after exhausting days at the showroom.
Then he spoke.
"Claire, I need you to understand something. Everything I've done was to protect us.""
"By stealing my inheritance?""
"By securing our future!""
"Our future doesn't include Vanessa?""
He looked away.
I laughed without humor.
"You can't even lie convincingly anymore.""
His phone rang again.
Vanessa.
He answered immediately.
"Where are you?""
Her voice was frantic.
"At the hotel. Someone has been following me. Adrian, I need you to come here.""
"Stay inside.""
"There's something you need to know about the photograph.""
"What?""
"The man beside Eleanor...""
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Vanessa, stop talking and listen to me.""
"No. You listen. I checked the date on the back. It was taken six months before you met Claire.""
A pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made my stomach twist.
"Your father was alive when Eleanor died.""
Adrian's face went completely blank.
"What?""
"I found another photograph. He's standing outside the hospital the night Eleanor was admitted.""
Adrian grabbed his coat.
"Don't touch anything. I'm coming.""
He moved toward the door.
I blocked his path.
"You're not leaving with my mother's belongings.""
He stared at me.
"Move.""
"No.""
His expression hardened.
"Claire, I swear, you don't want to know what happens if I lose everything.""
I looked him directly in the eyes.
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before taking everything from me.""
He pushed past me and disappeared downstairs.
A moment later, the front door slammed.
Daniel picked up the torn letter.
"There's more.""
He unfolded the second half.
At the bottom, beneath my mother's signature, was a handwritten address.
And a name.
*THOMAS WHITMORE — PRIVATE RESIDENCE, VERSAILLES.*
Daniel looked at me.
"We need to find him.""
I shook my head.
"Why would he know anything about my father?""
Daniel pointed to the last sentence.
Thomas knows who Adrian's father really is. He also knows why Eleanor was killed.
My knees nearly gave way.
"Killed?""
Daniel nodded.
"Mom didn't die in an ordinary accident.""
He opened the folder and showed me a copy of the original accident investigation.
The brakes on my mother's car had been deliberately tampered with.
The official report had classified it as mechanical failure.
But a handwritten note from the investigating mechanic stated that the brake lines showed evidence of intentional damage.
I covered my mouth.
"Why wasn't this investigated?""
"Because the mechanic disappeared two weeks later.""
I stared at the report.
Then my phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from an unknown sender.
The subject line contained only four words.
*YOUR MOTHER WAS RIGHT.*
I opened it.
There was one photograph attached.
Thomas Whitmore, standing outside a hospital room.
And beside him was a younger version of Adrian.
The message underneath read:
If you want the truth about your husband, come to Versailles tomorrow. Come alone.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
And Claire, don't tell Celeste. She was there when your mother made her final mistake.
