Chapter 2: The Heiress Nobody Expected

The auditorium was silent.

Adrian stared at Celeste as if she had just announced that he was bankrupt.

"Madame Moreau, I'm afraid there's been a misunderstanding," he said.

Celeste didn't answer him.

Instead, she guided me toward the front row and asked an assistant to bring another chair.

Vanessa remained seated.

"Excuse me," she said sharply.

"I believe this is a private conversation.""

Celeste slowly turned her head.

"Young woman, you're wearing a necklace that belongs to a deceased friend of mine. I suggest you worry less about conversations and more about explaining that.""

Vanessa instinctively covered the emeralds.

Adrian stepped between them.

"This is a family matter. Claire and I can resolve it privately.""

Celeste gave a humorless smile.

"Family matter? Adrian, you have mistaken my patience for ignorance.""

She opened the leather folder in her hands.

Inside were several documents, each bearing the seal of Moreau International.

I recognized the company name.

My mother had mentioned it occasionally when I was a child, but she had never explained her relationship with Celeste.

"Madame Moreau," I whispered, "what exactly is happening?""

She sat beside me.

"Your mother and I founded Moreau International thirty-two years ago. I handled the public collections. Eleanor handled the creative direction, intellectual property, and private investment structure.""

I stared at her.

"My mother was a businesswoman?""

Celeste nodded.

"One of the most brilliant designers Europe has ever known. She created pieces that were copied by houses ten times our size. But she disliked publicity. She wanted her work to speak for itself.""

I remembered my mother sitting at our kitchen table, drawing dresses on napkins while I colored beside her.

She had always told me that beauty meant nothing without integrity.

I had never imagined those sketches had helped build a fashion empire.

Celeste placed a document in front of me.

"Before her death, Eleanor transferred her controlling interests into a protected family trust. You are its sole beneficiary.""

I looked at the first page.

My hands began trembling.

Forty-two percent of Moreau International.

A company valued at several billion euros.

"That can't be right.""

"It is.""

Adrian grabbed the document.

"Let me see that.""

Celeste pulled it away.

"You may look when I permit you to.""

His jaw tightened.

"Claire has never mentioned owning shares in your company.""

"Perhaps because she didn't know.""

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

"This is ridiculous. Adrian's company has its own investors. Whatever arrangement you're discussing has nothing to do with us.""

Celeste looked at her.

"Actually, Miss Hart, it has everything to do with you.""

She removed another document.

It was a licensing agreement between Moreau International and Vale Atelier, Adrian's luxury fashion company.

I recognized the signature at the bottom.

Adrian's.

Celeste continued.

"Vale Atelier has used several protected design archives under a licensing arrangement. Your husband has recently submitted a proposal to transfer those rights into a new company.""

Adrian's face changed.

"That proposal was preliminary.""

"Then you should have no objection to discussing it.""

Celeste placed the proposed ownership structure on the table.

Adrian Vale: 60%.

Vanessa Hart: 40%.

I searched the page for my name.

It wasn't there.

"Why is Vanessa listed as a shareholder?"" I asked.

Adrian rubbed his forehead.

"Claire, this is complicated corporate restructuring. You wouldn't understand.""

"Then explain it to me.""

He looked around at the watching executives.

"Not here.""

Celeste answered for him.

"His proposal would place assets controlled by your mother's trust under a new entity, while excluding you entirely.""

I stared at my husband.

"How?""

Adrian exhaled impatiently.

"You signed the authorization.""

My blood ran cold.

"What authorization?""

"Three months ago. The documents I gave you at home.""

I remembered that evening.

He had arrived late, carrying a thick folder.

He told me the bank required updated signatures because of a restructuring.

I had been exhausted after a long day helping his creative director prepare the winter collection.

He had placed a glass of wine beside me and kissed my forehead.

"Just routine paperwork, sweetheart. I need your signature on a few pages.""

I had signed where he pointed.

I looked at him now.

"You told me those were insurance documents.""

"They were business documents.""

"You lied.""

He lowered his voice.

"Don't be dramatic.""

Celeste removed a third document.

"Fortunately, Eleanor anticipated this possibility. The trust requires independent verification before any inherited interest can be transferred.""

Adrian snatched a breath.

"That's not relevant.""

"It becomes relevant when someone submits a transfer authorization containing a potentially forged or improperly obtained beneficiary signature.""

The word forged made several people turn.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"Adrian, you told me everything was legal.""

He glared at her.

"Sit down.""

She didn't.

Celeste continued.

"Furthermore, the necklace is not simply sentimental jewelry. It is part of Eleanor's personal archive. Its clasp contains a miniature authentication key associated with her original design registry.""

I looked at the emeralds.

"The hidden compartment?""

Celeste nodded.

"Your mother told me you knew about it.""

"I never opened it.""

Vanessa immediately reached for the clasp.

"Well, I don't know anything about a compartment. Adrian gave it to me in a gift box.""

Celeste's expression hardened.

"Then you should have no difficulty returning it.""

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

He said nothing.

For the first time that evening, she appeared uncertain.

Celeste leaned toward me.

"Claire, there's something else. Your mother didn't merely leave you shares. She left you voting control over a special class of protected assets. Your husband has been trying to obtain access to those assets for almost two years.""

I looked at Adrian.

"Two years?""

He swallowed.

"That's not what happened.""

"Then what happened?""

Before he could answer, Celeste's assistant approached and whispered something into her ear.

Celeste's expression darkened.

She checked her phone.

Then she turned the screen toward me.

It was a photograph of a document filed that afternoon.

A corporate authorization.

My name appeared beneath a signature.

Except I had never signed it.

Celeste spoke quietly.

"Claire, someone has already attempted to activate the transfer.""

I looked at the date.

It was today.

May you like

And beneath the signature was the name of the witness.

Vanessa Hart.
