Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Entire Conspiracy

"Eight minutes.""

The automated voice echoed through the underground archive.

Red emergency lights flashed above the steel cabinets.

Adrian stood motionless, staring at the security speaker.

"Father!"" he shouted.

"Turn it off!""

Robert Vale laughed.

"Have you finally understood, Adrian? You were never going to inherit anything.""

Adrian grabbed the speaker.

"You promised me Moreau International!""

"I promised you an opportunity. You failed to deliver.""

Vanessa struggled against her restraints.

"Adrian, get us out of here!""

He turned toward her.

"Shut up!""

I stepped toward Julian.

"Are you hurt?""

He shook his head.

"Just get Vanessa free.""

I pulled a small blade from the emergency kit attached to the wall and cut through her restraints.

Daniel rushed toward the security panel.

"Claire, we need to stop the countdown.""

Celeste examined the control screen.

"The destruction sequence is connected to the original archive's security system. We need two authentication keys.""

I held up the silver key.

"And the second?""

Celeste pointed toward the emerald necklace in Adrian's hand.

"The necklace contains the first key. The second is held by the trust's authorized beneficiary.""

"Me.""

She nodded.

"Your mother's system recognizes your biometric signature.""

Adrian suddenly stepped toward me.

"Give me the key.""

I moved backward.

"No.""

"Claire, this isn't the time for revenge.""

I stared at him.

"You locked my brother in a room, kidnapped Vanessa, and tried to destroy my mother's life's work. What exactly do you think we're discussing?""

He lowered his voice.

"Listen to me. Robert will destroy everything. We need to work together.""

"Funny. You didn't seem interested in working together when you gave my seat to Vanessa.""

His expression twisted.

"That was different.""

"Was it?""

He reached for my arm.

Julian tackled him before he could touch me.

Both men crashed against a display table.

A glass case shattered.

Adrian punched Julian across the face.

"You're nothing!"" he screamed.

"You're just a stolen child my father never wanted!""

Julian wiped blood from his lip.

"And you're the son he used because he couldn't get what he wanted from Eleanor.""

Adrian swung again.

This time Julian caught his wrist.

Daniel reached the control panel.

"Claire! I need your hand!""

I rushed over.

The scanner illuminated.

A message appeared.

*BENNETT TRUST BENEFICIARY IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED.*

I placed my palm against the glass.

A second message appeared.

*DNA VERIFICATION PENDING.*

Celeste looked confused.

"That shouldn't be necessary.""

The system began processing.

Then the speaker crackled.

Robert's voice returned.

"Very touching. Eleanor always believed she could protect everyone with paperwork.""

I looked toward the ceiling camera.

"You're a coward!""

A laugh echoed through the room.

"Your mother said exactly the same thing.""

"Then you know she was right.""

The countdown reached six minutes.

The scanner turned red.

*IDENTITY VERIFICATION FAILED.*

Celeste stared at the screen.

"Impossible. You're the registered beneficiary.""

I looked at the small silver key.

Then I remembered the hidden compartment in my mother's necklace.

The tiny inscription beneath the largest emerald.

E.B.

But beside it, there had been another set of letters.

C.E.B.

Claire Eleanor Bennett.

I placed the key into the scanner's narrow slot and entered my full legal name.

The screen flashed.

*SECONDARY AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED.*

A new prompt appeared.

*CONFIRM INHERITANCE ACTIVATION?*

I pressed YES.

The countdown stopped at four minutes and thirty-two seconds.

A deep mechanical sound echoed beneath our feet.

The central archive cabinet unlocked.

Inside sat a thick black ledger and a sealed metal box.

Celeste gasped.

"Eleanor's original ownership records.""

I opened the ledger.

The first pages contained the original company agreements.

The next pages contained bank transfers, unauthorized licensing contracts, and copies of forged signatures.

Then I reached a section labeled:

*THE BENNETT FAMILY PROTECTION AGREEMENT.*

There were three names listed as protected beneficiaries.

Claire Eleanor Bennett.

Daniel James Bennett.

Julian Thomas Whitmore.

My eyes filled with tears.

My mother had never forgotten her son.

She had protected him even when she couldn't find him.

But the final section contained something far more disturbing.

A list of payments made to individuals connected to my mother's accident.

The first transfer came from Robert Vale.

The second came from Celeste Moreau.

The third came from an account belonging to Adrian.

I looked at Celeste.

She began crying.

"I didn't know he intended to kill her.""

"But you paid him.""

"I thought it was a settlement to stop Eleanor from exposing the company scandal. I was wrong.""

Robert's voice interrupted us.

"Stop reading!""

The ceiling speakers crackled.

Then the archive doors began closing.

Daniel shouted.

"He's activating the lockdown!""

Julian grabbed the ledger.

Vanessa pulled the sealed metal box toward her.

Adrian suddenly broke free from the broken display table and ran toward the exit.

"Father! Let me out!""

Robert's voice was ice-cold.

"You wanted the empire. Now you can stay with it.""

The steel doors slammed.

The emergency lights turned red.

And a new message appeared on the security screen.

*MANUAL DESTRUCTION OVERRIDE ACTIVATED.*

Celeste stared at the display.

"He's going to flood the archive with fire-suppression chemicals. The system will destroy every paper document.""

I looked at the sealed metal box.

There was a small inscription on its lid.

For Claire, when the truth is finally complete.

I opened it.

Inside was a second recording.

And when my mother's voice began speaking, I heard a sentence that changed everything.

"Claire, if Robert has returned, then you must know who actually ordered my death.""

I pressed the playback button.

My mother's next words were almost a whisper.

"It wasn't Robert.""

She paused.

"It was someone you have loved your entire life.""

I slowly turned toward the people standing beside me.

May you like

And realized the final betrayal hadn't come from Adrian.

It had come from someone much closer.
