Chapter 11: The Child Eleanor Never Buried

I called Vanessa twelve times.

She didn't answer.

Daniel immediately contacted a private security firm and gave them her last known address.

We arrived twenty minutes later.

Her apartment door was open.

A lamp lay broken beside the sofa.

A glass of water had spilled across the carpet.

Vanessa's handbag was still on the kitchen counter.

But she was gone.

"Adrian took her," I whispered.

Daniel examined the floor.

"Look.""

Near the doorway was a small silver pendant.

I recognized it.

It was identical to the one my mother used to wear before she inherited the emerald necklace.

I picked it up.

Inside was a photograph of two babies.

One was wrapped in a white blanket.

The other wore a pale blue cap.

On the back, someone had written:

Two children. One promise. Never separate them.

I turned toward Daniel.

"Twins?""

He looked at the photograph.

"Maybe.""

A notification appeared on my phone.

An email from James Whitmore.

*The meeting has changed. Come to the old Bennett estate. I have the truth about Eleanor's first child.*

I stared at the address.

It was the house where my mother had lived before marrying my stepfather and moving us to London.

I hadn't visited in almost twenty years.

Daniel and I drove there before sunrise.

The property stood behind a tall iron gate, surrounded by overgrown gardens.

A light was burning upstairs.

James opened the front door himself.

He looked older than the photograph, but there was no mistaking his face.

He stared at me for a long moment.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

"Claire.""

I didn't move.

He extended his hand.

I ignored it.

"Tell me why you disappeared.""

He nodded slowly.

"You deserve that answer.""

We entered a study filled with old photographs and dusty books.

James placed three documents on the desk.

The first was his original marriage certificate to Eleanor.

The second was a hospital record.

The third was a birth registration.

I stared at the hospital record.

Two children had been delivered on the same night.

A girl named Claire Eleanor Bennett.

And a boy whose name had been crossed out.

"Who was the boy?"" I asked.

James sat down.

"Your twin brother.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Eleanor gave birth to twins. You were healthy. Your brother had breathing complications. He was transferred to another hospital, and we were told he had died.""

"You're saying my mother had another child?""

James nodded.

"She never believed he was dead.""

I stared at the document.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Because the hospital records were altered. Someone had arranged for the child to be registered under another name.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who?""

James looked at him.

"Robert Vale.""

My stomach dropped.

"Adrian's father?""

"Robert worked with the hospital's private medical foundation. He arranged the transfer and falsified the records. Eleanor spent years trying to discover where the baby had gone.""

I sat down.

"Did she find him?""

James opened a wooden box.

Inside was a photograph of a little boy standing beside a woman.

The boy had dark hair and the same distinctive eyes as the man in the photograph from my bank transfer.

James pointed to him.

"Your brother.""

I couldn't look away.

"What happened to him?""

James's voice became quiet.

"Robert Vale raised him under another name.""

Daniel frowned.

"Why would he do that?""

"Because the boy was the rightful heir to a substantial portion of Eleanor's private family estate. Robert believed he could use him to gain control of the inheritance.""

I felt sick.

"Who is he now?""

James hesitated.

Then he placed another photograph on the desk.

It showed a man standing outside the Moreau International headquarters.

I recognized him immediately.

He was Adrian's closest friend.

His business partner.

The man who had helped him build Vale Atelier.

*Julian Cross.*

I stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

"Julian?""

James nodded.

"Your twin brother was renamed Julian by Robert. He grew up believing his biological parents had abandoned him.""

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked stunned.

"Does Julian know?""

"No. At least, he didn't when I last spoke to him.""

I stared at the photograph.

For years, Julian had visited our home.

He had attended our wedding.

He had sat at my dining table and called me Adrian's lucky charm.

He had even brought flowers when my mother died.

And I had never known he was my brother.

"Why did you wait so long to tell me?""

James looked devastated.

"Because Eleanor made me promise that I wouldn't expose the truth until I could prove Robert's involvement. Then she died, and I discovered that Adrian had inherited Robert's network of contacts.""

"Why didn't you come to us?""

"Because the night Eleanor died, someone sent me a photograph of you leaving school. They threatened to make you disappear if I ever contacted you.""

I felt tears running down my cheeks.

My father reached into the box and removed a sealed letter.

It was addressed to me.

"Eleanor wrote this three days before her accident," he said.

I opened it.

My darling Claire,

You have a brother. His name is Julian, and one day you may find him. Do not blame him for the years we lost. He was taken from us before he had a chance to choose.

I stopped reading.

A second paragraph followed.

If Julian returns, trust him with the truth, but never trust the man who raised him.

I looked at James.

"Robert raised Julian.""

He nodded.

"And Adrian learned everything he knows from Robert.""

Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.

It was a private number.

He answered and put it on speaker.

A man's voice sounded.

"Daniel, it's Julian.""

I stepped forward.

"Julian?""

There was a long silence.

Then he spoke.

"Claire, I need you to listen carefully. Adrian has Vanessa. He's taking her to the Moreau headquarters.""

"Why?""

"Because she's carrying the original ownership key.""

"And the archive?""

Julian lowered his voice.

"He's planning to destroy it tonight.""

I looked at my father's letter.

Then at the photograph of my brother.

"Why are you helping us?""

Julian's answer was barely audible.

"Because I just found out who my mother was.""

May you like

He paused.

"And Claire, there's something else. Adrian knows we're twins.""
