Chapter 14: My Mother's Final Confession

"Claire, don't stop the recording.""

Daniel's voice trembled.

The red lights continued flashing.

The countdown on the security panel showed three minutes.

But nobody moved.

My mother's voice filled the archive.

"If you're hearing this, I have failed to protect you from the people I trusted most.""

I held the recording device with both hands.

"Your father, James, is not responsible for my death. He tried to protect you and Daniel. Robert Vale was involved in the stolen designs, but he did not make the final decision.""

I looked toward James's photograph on the document inside the box.

Who had she meant?

The recording continued.

"The person who arranged the accident was someone I considered my sister.""

Celeste covered her mouth.

My mother said the name.

"Margaret Hart.""

Vanessa staggered backward.

"No.""

Her face had gone white.

"That's impossible.""

I turned toward her.

"Your mother?""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"She told me Eleanor had destroyed her life. She said she wanted justice.""

My mother's voice continued.

"Margaret believed I had stolen the life she deserved. She believed Robert loved me, that I had taken her place, and that my daughter had inherited everything that should have belonged to her.""

Vanessa began crying.

"She told me she was trying to get our family back.""

I felt a terrible sadness for her.

For all the cruelty she had shown me, she had been manipulated by the same lies that had destroyed my family.

But the recording wasn't finished.

"Margaret arranged the meeting with Robert and Adrian. She knew the brakes on my car would be damaged. She also knew that Celeste would be too afraid to expose the truth afterward.""

Celeste dropped her eyes.

I looked at her.

"Why did you protect Margaret?""

Celeste's voice broke.

"Because she threatened to release evidence showing my involvement in the stolen designs. I had spent my entire life building that company. I was terrified of losing it.""

I stared at her.

"So you let my mother die.""

Celeste began crying harder.

"I should have gone to the police.""

"Yes. You should have.""

The recording continued.

"Claire, Margaret is not the only person who needs to answer for what happened. Adrian knew about the conspiracy. He helped move the money and conceal the documents. He knew my car had been tampered with.""

I turned toward Adrian.

He was standing near the wall, his face drained of color.

"Did you know?"" I asked.

He said nothing.

"Adrian, did you know my mother was going to die?""

He looked at me.

"I didn't arrange the accident.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He swallowed.

"I knew there was going to be a confrontation.""

My stomach turned.

"You knew she was in danger?""

"Claire—"

"You knew?""

He finally whispered:

"Yes.""

For eleven years, I had slept beside this man.

I had held his hand during his father's funeral.

I had kissed him goodbye before business trips.

And he had known that my mother had been targeted.

I stepped toward him.

"You let me mourn her without telling me.""

He lowered his head.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"Stop using that word!""

My voice echoed through the archive.

"You weren't protecting me. You were protecting yourself.""

The recording continued.

"My darling, there is one final truth. The Bennett trust was never intended to belong to only one person. I created it to protect all three of my children.""

I froze.

Three?

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

"Three?""

My mother's voice answered.

"Claire, Daniel, and Julian. Each of you has an equal personal claim to the family archive. But the controlling voting rights belong to the three of you together. No one can sell, transfer, or dissolve the collection without unanimous consent.""

Julian stared at the screen.

For the first time, he looked like a little boy waiting for his mother to come home.

"She remembered me," he whispered.

I took his hand.

"She never stopped.""

The recording ended.

Then a loud alarm sounded.

The destruction sequence had resumed.

Daniel rushed toward the control panel.

"Four minutes? No. The system has restarted with a different sequence!""

Celeste examined the screen.

"Robert has activated the emergency purge.""

A digital map appeared.

The archive's ventilation system was shutting down.

A red warning flashed.

*MANUAL EXIT CONTROL DISABLED.*

Vanessa suddenly stepped toward the central cabinet.

"There's another way out.""

Everyone turned.

She pointed to a narrow service corridor behind the oldest display cases.

"My mother showed me the plans. She said Eleanor built a second exit in case the original archive was ever compromised.""

Adrian stared at her.

"You knew about this?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She told me years ago.""

"Why didn't you say something?""

Vanessa looked at him with disgust.

"Because you were planning to leave me here.""

He stepped toward her.

"Vanessa, listen—"

She slapped him.

Hard.

"You gave me a dead woman's necklace and told me I was finally getting what I deserved. You knew I was her daughter. You knew I had been searching for the truth.""

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

Julian pulled him away.

Daniel found the hidden exit lever.

The wall shifted.

A narrow staircase appeared.

"Everyone out!""

Celeste remained beside the cabinet.

I grabbed her arm.

"Come on!""

She shook her head.

"Not without the ledger.""

I looked at the papers in Julian's hands.

"We have it.""

"Then go.""

I pulled her toward the staircase.

We emerged into the underground loading area seconds before the archive doors sealed completely.

The building's alarm continued screaming.

Outside, police sirens approached.

Daniel had already contacted the authorities using the original evidence from the USB drive.

Adrian tried to escape through the loading bay.

But two uniformed officers blocked his path.

"Adrian Vale, you're under arrest pending investigation into fraud, conspiracy, and the attempted destruction of protected corporate records.""

He looked toward me.

"Claire!""

I didn't move.

"Tell them this is a misunderstanding!""

I looked at him.

"For eleven years, I believed your explanations. I'm finished believing you.""

As officers placed handcuffs around his wrists, a black limousine pulled into the driveway.

The rear door opened.

An elderly woman stepped out.

She wore a dark green coat and carried a silver walking stick.

Vanessa stared at her.

Then she whispered:

"Mother?""

Margaret Hart looked at her daughter.

Then at me.

And smiled.

"Well, Eleanor's little family reunion is finally complete.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

Because Margaret wasn't supposed to know where we were.

And she wasn't supposed to be alive.

But the woman standing before us had something in her hand.

A signed document bearing my mother's signature.

May you like

She raised it toward the police.

"Before you arrest anyone," she announced, "perhaps you should know that Eleanor Bennett legally transferred the entire company to me three days before she died.""
