Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
My mother stood between Adrian and Celeste outside a Paris hotel. She was wearing the emerald necklace, a cream-colored coat, and the same expression she had worn whenever she was trying to hide something from me.
But it was the date that frightened me.
Three days before her fatal car accident.
"Why was Adrian with my mother?"" I asked.
Celeste didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she walked to the office door, locked it, and pulled the curtains.
"Because Eleanor believed he had stolen something far more valuable than her designs.""
"What?""
"The original Bennett Collection.""
I shook my head.
"Those were just sketches.""
"No, Claire. They were the foundation of an entire fashion empire. Your mother had developed a proprietary construction technique that allowed couture garments to retain their shape without traditional internal support. She spent fifteen years perfecting it.""
I remembered my mother's sketches scattered across the dining table.
She used to tell me that fabric had a memory.
I had thought it was simply something beautiful she said.
Celeste continued.
"Adrian had access to her private archive because Eleanor trusted him. He was young, ambitious, and struggling to establish his own company. She wanted to help him.""
"And he stole from her.""
"We discovered that several designs had been reproduced without authorization. But when Eleanor confronted him, he claimed someone else had taken the sketches.""
"Did you believe him?""
Celeste looked down.
"I wanted to.""
That answer unsettled me.
I placed the photograph on the desk.
"Why did you cross out my mother's name?""
Celeste's expression changed.
"I didn't.""
"Someone did.""
She examined the handwriting on the back.
Then she reached for a magnifying glass.
"Claire, this photograph came from Eleanor's private archive. The writing isn't hers.""
"Whose is it?""
Celeste turned the photograph toward the light.
A small indentation appeared beneath the crossed-out name.
She whispered something in French.
"What?""
"Someone has removed another name beneath your mother's.""
My phone vibrated.
Daniel had sent a message.
*Claire, I'm at Mom's old storage facility. I found the original accident report. Call me before you trust anyone.*
I immediately called him.
No answer.
I tried again.
Still nothing.
"Where is your brother?"" Celeste asked.
"At my mother's storage facility.""
She froze.
"What facility?""
I gave her the address.
Celeste grabbed her coat.
"We need to leave.""
"Why?""
"Because that facility was supposed to have been permanently sealed after Eleanor died.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who sealed it?""
Celeste hesitated.
"Adrian.""
Twenty minutes later, we arrived at an industrial building outside central Paris.
Rain streaked the windshield of the black car.
The security gate stood open.
A single fluorescent light flickered above the entrance.
"Daniel!"" I shouted as we stepped inside.
My voice echoed through the corridor.
There were rows of storage units, most of them covered in dust.
Unit 314 stood at the far end.
Its metal door was slightly open.
I rushed toward it.
Inside, cardboard boxes had been scattered across the floor. Several garment bags hung from a rail. A filing cabinet lay on its side.
Someone had been searching.
"Daniel!""
A movement came from behind a stack of boxes.
My brother emerged, holding a small black folder.
"Claire!""
I ran toward him.
"Are you hurt?""
"I'm fine. But we don't have much time.""
He looked at Celeste.
His expression turned cold.
"Why is she here?""
"She brought me.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's exactly what Mom warned us about.""
Celeste stepped forward.
"Daniel, I understand your suspicion, but—"
"Don't."" He raised his hand.
"You had eleven years to tell Claire the truth.""
I turned toward him.
"What truth?""
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were photographs of several original designs, bank transfers, and a copy of an accident investigation.
He pointed to one photograph.
A black luxury car was parked outside my mother's apartment.
"Mom was followed for six weeks before she died.""
My throat tightened.
"By whom?""
Daniel turned the page.
A registration document showed the vehicle belonged to Vale Atelier.
I looked at Celeste.
She closed her eyes.
"Adrian used a company vehicle?""
Daniel nodded.
"And the person driving it wasn't Adrian.""
"Who was it?""
He placed another photograph on the table.
The image showed a woman standing beside the car.
I recognized her immediately.
Vanessa Hart.
But the date beneath the photograph was eleven years earlier.
Before she had supposedly met Adrian.
Before she had become his mistress.
Before I had even married him.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
"Mom knew Vanessa before you did.""
Then he opened the final page.
It contained a handwritten statement from my mother.
If anything happens to me, investigate the woman who calls herself Vanessa Hart. Her real name is recorded in the sealed file.
I stared at the words.
Then a metallic crash sounded behind us.
The storage facility lights went out.
Someone had locked the main entrance.
And from somewhere in the darkness, a familiar male voice spoke.
May you like
"Claire, you really should have stayed at the fashion show.""
Adrian.
