Chapter 9: The Brother My Family Buried

I read the DNA report three times.

Every time, the words remained the same.

*Maternal half-sibling relationship confirmed.*

I looked at my father.

"How is that possible?""

He closed his eyes.

"Because your mother had another child before you were born.""

"But you said he died.""

"That's what I was told.""

"By whom?""

He hesitated.

"My mother.""

My grandmother.

The woman who had left me a letter warning me about Daniel and Vanessa.

I felt anger rising.

"Did Grandma know he was alive?""

"I don't know.""

"Did you ever look for him?""

My father shook his head.

"No. I was grieving your mother. I believed what I was told.""

I stood.

"Then someone has been lying to this family for decades.""

Thomas Bennett entered the conference room carrying another folder.

He had spent the morning reviewing my grandmother's estate records.

When he saw the DNA report, he stopped.

"Have the results arrived?""

Helen nodded.

Thomas slowly removed his glasses.

"Then I believe we need to open Eleanor's second letter.""

I frowned.

"Second letter?""

He placed a small envelope on the table.

It was addressed to:

*Alexander Brooks — To Be Opened Only If Michael Is Found.*

My father stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

"Your mother gave it to me shortly before she died. She instructed me to keep it separate from Danielle's inheritance documents.""

My father took the envelope.

His hands shook as he opened it.

The letter was short.

He read it silently.

Then his face changed.

"What does it say?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Your mother discovered that Michael had not died.""

My throat tightened.

"Where was he?""

"She believed he had been placed with another family.""

Thomas nodded.

"Your grandmother hired an investigator to locate him. Unfortunately, the trail went cold.""

I stared at the letter.

"Why didn't she tell us?""

Thomas pointed to another paragraph.

"She suspected that someone within the family had arranged the adoption without her consent.""

My father stood abruptly.

"Who?""

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

"Your grandmother never identified the person in writing.""

I thought about Vanessa's photograph.

Daniel's payments.

The forged medical forms.

The trust.

Everything seemed connected, but I couldn't see the entire picture.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it was a woman named Rachel Collins.

I didn't recognize the number.

"Hello?""

A trembling voice answered.

"Is this Danielle Brooks?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Rachel. I think my son might be connected to your family.""

I stood.

"Your son?""

"His name is Michael.""

My father looked at me immediately.

I put the call on speaker.

Rachel began crying.

"Three weeks ago, my baby was discharged from a hospital in Atlanta. I was told he'd been healthy, but the nurse gave me a warning.""

"What warning?""

"She said someone might come looking for him. She told me never to let a man named Daniel Brooks near my son.""

My stomach dropped.

"Where are you now?""

"In Raleigh. North Carolina.""

"Is your baby safe?""

"Yes. But yesterday, someone came to my apartment asking questions.""

My father immediately motioned for his security director.

"Describe the person," he said.

Rachel hesitated.

"She was a blonde woman wearing a bright pink coat.""

Vanessa.

I felt sick.

"Rachel, listen to me. Do not let anyone inside your home. We're going to arrange help.""

She cried harder.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"The woman left a photograph outside my door.""

"Of whom?""

"Your husband.""

I closed my eyes.

Rachel continued.

"On the back, he wrote that if I didn't cooperate, he would tell the police I had stolen a baby.""

My father slammed his fist against the table.

"He's threatening a mother to conceal what he did.""

Helen immediately began arranging contact with authorities in North Carolina.

Thomas leaned toward the phone.

"Rachel, do you have any documents from the hospital?""

"Yes. I kept everything.""

"Especially the original identification bracelet?""

There was a pause.

Then Rachel whispered:

"I do.""

I felt my heart race.

"Can you read the number?""

She began searching through something.

Paper rustled.

Then she read a sequence of numbers.

Helen compared it with the hospital's archived record.

Her expression changed.

"That's the number from the blue bracelet.""

I looked at my father.

"What does that mean?""

Helen swallowed.

"It means Rachel's son was originally registered under a different identification number before the discharge paperwork was altered.""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Michael.""

Rachel began crying.

"Is he my son?""

Helen spoke gently.

"We need further testing to establish the complete facts. But we have strong evidence that your baby's records were manipulated.""

Then Rachel said something that made everyone freeze.

"There's another reason I called.""

I leaned closer.

"What is it?""

"The nurse who gave me the warning contacted me last night. She said she found something in the hospital's old records.""

"What?""

Rachel's voice broke.

"She said Daniel Brooks wasn't trying to steal your daughter's inheritance alone.""

My father leaned toward the phone.

"Who was helping him?""

Rachel took a shaky breath.

"Your grandmother's personal assistant.""

Thomas went completely still.

I looked at him.

"Who?""

Rachel answered.

"Margaret Ellis.""

Thomas dropped his glasses.

My grandmother's assistant had worked for our family for thirty-five years.

She'd attended my mother's funeral.

She'd helped organize my grandmother's estate.

And according to Thomas, she had been the last person to see the original letter concerning Michael.

My father immediately called the estate office.

"Find Margaret Ellis. I want her location.""

A minute later, Richard returned with his laptop.

"Sir, I found her.""

"Where?""

Richard turned the screen toward us.

It showed a live security photograph from the Grand Meridian.

Margaret Ellis was standing in the hotel lobby.

Beside her was Vanessa Whitmore.

And between them stood Daniel.

He was holding a document folder.

Richard enlarged the photograph.

There was a date stamp.

It had been taken just twelve minutes earlier.

My father stared at the screen.

"Why are they back at my hotel?""

Before anyone could answer, Helen's phone rang.

She listened for five seconds.

Then she looked at me.

"Danielle, the police have just discovered something in Daniel's abandoned apartment.""

"What?""

"They found a second set of birth records.""

I gripped the table.

"Whose?""

Helen looked directly into my eyes.

"Your mother, Eleanor Brooks, signed a document twenty-six years ago authorizing a private adoption.""

My father whispered:

"That's impossible.""

But Helen turned the page.

And beneath my grandmother's signature was another name.

May you like

The name of the person who had legally received custody of Michael.

*Vanessa Whitmore.*
