Chapter 5: The Reservation Made for My Baby
My father immediately called the hotel's security director.
"Nobody touches that reservation. I want the original booking records, payment information, and every access log connected to that suite.""
Richard was already moving toward the door.
"I'll handle it, sir.""
I held my daughter closer.
"Why would Daniel book a hotel room under Grace's name?""
My father looked at me.
"I don't know yet. But we're going to find out.""
Thomas closed his briefcase.
"Danielle, I strongly recommend that you and Grace stay somewhere secure tonight.""
"At Dad's house?""
"That's one option.""
My father nodded.
"You both come home with me.""
Before I could answer, Richard returned.
He looked unusually pale.
"Sir, we found the reservation.""
My father turned.
"Explain.""
Richard placed a printed record on the table.
"Suite 1808. Reserved for two adults and one infant. Arrival scheduled for 8:00 p.m. tonight.""
I recognized the suite number.
It was the same suite from the photograph.
"Who were the adults?"" I asked.
Richard hesitated.
"Daniel Brooks and Vanessa Whitmore.""
I felt something inside me collapse.
My father read the booking details.
"Why is there a third guest?""
Richard pointed to the final line.
"Grace Brooks.""
I shook my head.
"No. Absolutely not.""
The room had gone cold.
I could barely breathe.
"Did Daniel intend to bring my daughter there?""
"We haven't established that," Richard replied.
"But her name is on the reservation!""
My father put his hand on my shoulder.
"Nobody is taking Grace anywhere.""
At that moment, Helen Carter's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds, then frowned.
"Yes. I understand. Send it to me immediately.""
She ended the call.
"That was the hotel security team. They found something in the original booking notes.""
"What?"" my father asked.
Helen looked at me.
"The reservation was modified yesterday afternoon. Originally, it was for two adults. Your daughter's name was added afterward.""
"By whom?""
"Daniel.""
I stared at the document.
There was another detail.
A special request had been entered beneath the reservation.
*Private arrival. No public registration. Infant transfer to be handled discreetly.*
I read it twice.
"Infant transfer?""
My father snatched the paper.
"Who authorized that?""
Helen shook her head.
"We don't know. But the request references an outside family services consultant.""
Thomas immediately stood.
"Do not contact that consultant directly. We need to preserve the evidence and have the authorities investigate.""
I looked at my father.
"Did Daniel plan to take Grace from me?""
He didn't answer.
And somehow, that was worse than hearing yes.
A knock interrupted us.
The security director entered with a small evidence envelope.
"Mr. Brooks, we recovered this from the private elevator security station.""
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Vanessa entering the hotel three days earlier.
She wasn't alone.
Standing beside her was a woman holding a folder.
I recognized her immediately.
Dr. Patricia Morgan.
She had been the obstetrician who handled my prenatal consultations during the final months of pregnancy.
I remembered her cheerful smile, her reassuring voice, and the way she'd repeatedly encouraged Daniel to attend appointments.
My stomach turned.
"Why was my doctor meeting Vanessa?""
Helen studied the photograph.
"Do you know this woman?""
"Yes. She was my doctor.""
My father looked furious.
"Richard, preserve everything. Every visitor record. Every payment. Every message connected to this woman.""
The security director nodded.
Then Thomas spoke.
"Danielle, there is something else you should know.""
He opened his briefcase again.
"Your grandmother had a private investigator examine Daniel's business activities before she died. The investigator submitted a report, but your grandmother instructed me not to release it unless certain conditions were met.""
He placed a sealed folder before me.
The label read:
*DANIEL BROOKS — CONFIDENTIAL INVESTIGATION.*
I opened it.
The first page contained a list of bank transfers.
The second showed photographs of Daniel meeting Vanessa.
The third contained a company registration document.
My eyes stopped at the name of the company.
Whitmore Family Services LLC.
I turned to Thomas.
"What is this?""
"A company established shortly before your wedding.""
"Who owns it?""
He pointed to the registration details.
Vanessa Whitmore.
I kept reading.
The company had received several payments from Daniel's personal accounts.
One payment was dated two weeks before my daughter's birth.
Another was dated the day Grace was born.
Then I found a handwritten note from the investigator.
Subject appears to be arranging a financial and legal structure involving an unborn child. Possible use of falsified medical authorization. Further investigation recommended.
I dropped the folder.
My father caught it before it hit the floor.
"Danielle?""
I looked at him.
"They planned this before Grace was born.""
He nodded grimly.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel appeared.
*I know you're with your father. I need to see Grace tonight. If you refuse, I'll have no choice but to tell everyone what happened at the hospital.*
I read it aloud.
Thomas immediately reached for his glasses.
"Do not respond.""
My father looked at the message.
"He's threatening you.""
I nodded.
Then another message arrived.
*You have until eight o'clock. After that, I'll make sure the truth comes out.*
I looked at the clock.
It was 6:42 p.m.
May you like
And suddenly, I understood that Daniel wasn't asking to see his daughter.
He was trying to make sure I didn't discover something before eight o'clock.
