Chapter 11: My Grandmother's Final Betrayal

Margaret Ellis led me into the hotel's private boardroom.

My father, Helen, Thomas, and two investigators followed.

Vanessa was already seated at the conference table.

Daniel stood beside the windows, looking like a man who hadn't slept in days.

When he saw me, he attempted a smile.

"Danielle. Thank God you're here.""

I didn't respond.

Vanessa pointed toward a chair.

"Please sit down. We should settle this like adults.""

I placed the photograph on the table.

"Tell me why you were holding my brother's adoption papers.""

Vanessa looked at Margaret.

Margaret sighed.

"Because your grandmother asked me to arrange it.""

My father immediately stepped forward.

"You're lying.""

Margaret opened a folder.

"Eleanor discovered that your mother had been pregnant with twins. After Michael was born, there were complications. The family was told that he had died.""

I frowned.

"Twins?""

Thomas looked startled.

"That isn't what the original medical records indicated.""

Margaret continued.

"Your grandmother believed Michael would be safer if he were raised away from the family.""

My father shook his head.

"Why?""

"Because Eleanor was terrified of losing the family fortune. She believed two heirs would create a succession dispute.""

I stared at her.

"You're saying my grandmother gave away her grandson because of money?""

Margaret nodded.

"She believed she was protecting the family.""

My father slammed his palm against the table.

"Mother would never have done that.""

Margaret opened another document.

"She signed the initial guardianship arrangement.""

Thomas examined the page.

"That signature is genuine.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Then why did she leave me letters saying she wanted Michael found?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Because she changed her mind.""

"Then why didn't she tell us?""

"She was afraid.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone in this family seems to have been afraid of something. Meanwhile, Michael grew up without knowing who he was.""

Vanessa finally spoke.

"I loved him.""

I turned toward her.

"You never raised him.""

"I was supposed to.""

"That doesn't make him yours.""

Her expression hardened.

"Your grandmother promised me that child.""

My father stared at her.

"My mother would never have promised you anything.""

Vanessa opened her handbag.

"Then perhaps you should read this.""

She placed a handwritten letter on the table.

It was dated twenty-six years earlier.

The letter appeared to be from Eleanor Brooks.

Vanessa, I understand your desire to have a family. If the circumstances allow, Michael may one day become part of your household. Until then, everything must remain confidential.

Thomas read it twice.

"Where did you get this?""

"Margaret gave it to me.""

My father took the letter.

"This isn't a legal adoption.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Perhaps not. But it was a promise.""

I looked at her.

"And what about Rachel? The woman who actually gave birth to Michael?""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Rachel was never supposed to be involved.""

I felt anger rush through me.

"She is his mother!""

"She couldn't provide the life he deserved.""

"You don't get to decide that!""

Vanessa stood.

"Look at your family! You were born into money. You never had to worry about medical bills, housing, or education. Rachel had nothing.""

I stepped toward her.

"And that gave you the right to threaten her?""

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel finally spoke.

"Danielle, please. We can still fix this.""

I turned toward him.

"Fix what?""

He approached me.

"I made mistakes. I know that. But I was trying to protect our family.""

I laughed.

"You slept with Vanessa while I was giving birth to your daughter.""

His face tightened.

"I was under pressure.""

"You forged my signature.""

"I didn't—"

"You arranged access to my medical records.""

He lowered his voice.

"Listen, I can explain.""

I placed the hotel reservation on the table.

"And you booked a room for Vanessa and my newborn daughter.""

Daniel looked at Margaret.

She avoided his eyes.

My father spoke.

"Enough. The police have the documents.""

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"You think a few papers will destroy me?""

Helen placed another document in front of her.

"Actually, Mrs. Whitmore, we have more than papers.""

She opened her laptop.

"Financial records show that your company received $1.2 million from accounts connected to Daniel's investment business.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Those were legitimate consulting fees.""

"Then you won't mind explaining why the payments were followed by transfers to a private account in the Cayman Islands.""

Daniel turned sharply toward her.

"What?""

Vanessa glared at him.

"Don't pretend you didn't know.""

My father looked at Daniel.

"Did you know about those transfers?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Please. You were the one who told me the trust would be activated after the guardianship documents were approved.""

Daniel's face went pale.

Helen continued.

"There's another issue. The forged documents were submitted using Margaret's access credentials.""

Margaret suddenly stood.

"I did what Eleanor asked!""

Thomas shook his head.

"Then why did you continue after her death?""

Margaret didn't answer.

A police officer entered the room.

"Margaret Ellis, we need you to accompany us for questioning.""

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

And Daniel looked at me.

"Danielle, don't let them take me. I'm still your husband.""

I stared at him.

"No. You're the man who made me afraid to trust the world.""

The officers escorted Margaret out.

Vanessa remained seated.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed one final document.

She slid it toward my father.

"You should read this before you celebrate.""

He picked it up.

His expression changed immediately.

"What is this?""

Vanessa smiled.

"The original trust agreement.""

Thomas leaned closer.

Then his face went white.

Because the document contained a clause none of us had seen before.

If a child born to a Brooks family member was found to have an unrecognized sibling, the entire inheritance would be placed under temporary control of an independent trustee.

And the trustee's name was printed at the bottom.

*Daniel Brooks.*
