Chapter 13: The Name on the Birth Certificate

I couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

The birth certificate was old, yellowed around the edges, and marked with a hospital seal from twenty-six years earlier.

But the name under BIOLOGICAL FATHER was perfectly clear.

Edward Brooks.

My grandfather.

The man who had raised my mother as his daughter.

The man whose portrait hung above the fireplace in my father's house.

I looked at Thomas.

"How is that possible?""

He slowly sat down.

"Danielle, your grandfather died believing he had no surviving biological children outside his marriage.""

My father shook his head.

"That's impossible. Edward and Eleanor were married for forty-seven years.""

Daniel stood near the police officers, his face pale.

"That's what everyone believed.""

I turned toward him.

"Explain.""

He hesitated.

Then he looked at my father.

"Your grandmother discovered that your grandfather had fathered a child with another woman before he married Eleanor.""

My father looked as though he'd been struck.

"Who?""

"Rachel's grandmother.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Rachel Collins?""

Daniel nodded.

"Rachel is descended from the woman who gave birth to Edward Brooks's first child. Michael's biological father is connected to that branch of the family.""

Thomas shook his head.

"That would make the inheritance situation considerably more complicated.""

Daniel continued.

"Your grandfather knew about the child. He arranged financial support for the mother but refused to acknowledge the relationship publicly.""

My father walked toward the window.

"Why would Mother hide this?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because when she discovered the truth, she realized the Brooks family fortune could be challenged by another biological descendant.""

I stared at him.

"So Grandma knew Michael might have a claim?""

"Yes.""

"And instead of telling us, she allowed everyone to believe he was dead?""

Daniel nodded.

I felt sick.

My grandmother had left me letters warning me about greed and betrayal, but she'd never told me the truth about my own family.

My father turned around.

"Where did you get this birth certificate?""

"Margaret gave it to me.""

"Why?""

"She said it was proof that Michael could be connected to the family trust.""

I looked at Daniel.

"And what did you plan to do with it?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Vanessa wanted to use the document to challenge the trust. She believed that if Michael's biological relationship to Edward Brooks was established, she could argue that he should be raised by someone connected to the family.""

"By her.""

"Yes.""

Vanessa suddenly interrupted.

"That's not what I wanted!""

I turned toward her.

"Then what did you want?""

She began crying.

"I wanted a child. I wanted a family. I wanted something that belonged to me.""

I stared at her.

"You had no right to take someone else's child.""

She looked away.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

"Vanessa, stop pretending this was only about motherhood. You wanted the trust.""

She turned toward him.

"And you wanted the money!""

The two began arguing.

My father raised his voice.

"Enough!""

Both fell silent.

Then he turned toward the officers.

"I want every document preserved. I want the financial investigation expanded. And I want Rachel and Michael protected immediately.""

One officer nodded.

"We're coordinating with North Carolina authorities.""

I looked at Helen.

"Can Rachel come here?""

"She can, but we should wait until the authorities establish a safe travel arrangement.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Rachel.

*Danielle, I need to tell you something before I come to Atlanta. Michael's birth certificate isn't the only document I found.*

I called her immediately.

"Rachel?""

Her voice sounded exhausted.

"I found a letter in the box the hospital gave me when Michael was discharged.""

"What letter?""

"Your grandmother wrote it.""

I closed my eyes.

"What does it say?""

Rachel began reading.

To the woman who raises this child, I ask only one thing: never allow him to believe he was unwanted. His mother loved him. His family loved him. And one day, when the truth can be told safely, he deserves to know where he came from.

I felt tears run down my cheeks.

"Rachel, do you have the original?""

"Yes.""

"Please keep it safe.""

She hesitated.

"There's something else. The letter says Michael's biological father isn't Edward Brooks.""

I froze.

"What?""

Rachel continued.

"Your grandmother wrote that Edward adopted your mother after discovering that she was the child of his younger brother.""

Thomas stood abruptly.

"What?""

I looked at him.

Rachel continued reading.

The family must never confuse blood with love. Edward chose to raise Eleanor's daughter as his own, and he gave her a life she deserved.

My father slowly sat down.

"So Mother wasn't my father's biological daughter?""

Thomas nodded.

"Apparently, Edward raised Eleanor's child from an earlier relationship.""

I stared at the ceiling.

The entire family history was collapsing around us.

Then Rachel said something else.

"The letter names the biological father.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who?""

She read the name.

"Richard Brooks.""

My father looked at Thomas.

"Richard?""

Thomas went pale.

"Your grandfather's younger brother.""

I stared at the birth certificate again.

That meant Michael was descended from Edward's brother, not Edward himself.

But there was another problem.

Richard Brooks had died without children.

Or so we'd been told.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why did Vanessa want Michael so desperately?""

He finally answered.

"Because if Michael's biological lineage was confirmed, he could challenge several old inheritance arrangements. Vanessa believed she could become his guardian and control his legal interests.""

My father looked furious.

"She tried to manufacture an heir she could control.""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Then the police officer approached him.

"Mr. Brooks, we need you to come with us.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Danielle, please. I know I don't deserve forgiveness, but I never wanted Grace hurt.""

I held his gaze.

"You don't get to decide what your intentions mean anymore. Your actions already told me everything.""

The officers escorted him away.

Vanessa followed, shouting that she'd been manipulated.

But as she passed me, she leaned close enough to whisper:

"You're celebrating too soon. There's one more person who knows the truth about Michael.""

I stared at her.

"Who?""

She smiled sadly.

"Your father.""

Then she walked away.

I turned toward Alexander.

May you like

He looked at me, his face drained of color.

"Danielle, there's something I need to tell you about the night your mother died.""
