Chapter 8: The Blue Bracelet

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time Grace moved in her bassinet, I reached over to touch her tiny hand.

I knew her face.

I knew the little wrinkle between her eyebrows when she cried.

I knew the way she made a soft clicking sound when she was hungry.

But suddenly, I was terrified that none of those memories proved what I needed them to prove.

At 7:00 the next morning, my father arranged a meeting with the hospital's chief medical officer.

Helen insisted on accompanying us.

Thomas brought my grandmother's original trust documents.

And I brought Grace.

I refused to leave her behind.

The hospital's legal department placed us in a private conference room.

A woman named Dr. Susan Parker entered carrying two thick files.

"Mr. Brooks, I've reviewed the material your attorney provided.""

My father nodded.

"What have you found?""

She opened the first file.

"There are discrepancies in the newborn identification records from the night Danielle delivered.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Does that mean my baby was switched?""

Dr. Parker looked at me carefully.

"It means we cannot responsibly confirm the chain of custody using the records currently available.""

My heart sank.

She continued.

"We have also identified unauthorized access to the newborn unit's electronic records.""

Helen leaned forward.

"By whom?""

"An employee account belonging to Melissa Collins.""

My father tapped the table.

"Can you recover the original identification records?""

"We're attempting to retrieve them from the archived system.""

Dr. Parker removed two photographs.

The first showed a newborn wearing a pink identification band.

The second showed another newborn wearing a blue band.

"These images were recovered from a backup server. The timestamps are approximately forty minutes apart.""

I stared at the photographs.

"Which one is Grace?""

Dr. Parker shook her head.

"We need DNA testing.""

I looked at my father.

"Do it. Today.""

He nodded.

"Whatever is necessary.""

Dr. Parker arranged for samples to be collected under controlled procedures.

A nurse took a cheek swab from Grace.

Another collected a sample from me.

Then Helen asked a question.

"What about the other newborn?""

Dr. Parker looked uncomfortable.

"We identified a male infant who was discharged from the hospital on the same night. His mother was listed as Rachel Collins.""

"Related to Melissa?"" Thomas asked.

"We're investigating that possibility.""

My father frowned.

"Where is the mother now?""

Dr. Parker checked her records.

"She moved out of state shortly after delivery.""

Helen wrote something down.

"Which state?""

"North Carolina.""

I looked toward the window.

Somewhere out there was a woman who might have lost her baby.

And somewhere else was a little boy whose identity might have been stolen before he could even open his eyes.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

"Where are you?""

His voice sounded irritated.

"Good morning to you too.""

"Tell me about the blue bracelet.""

Silence.

Then he laughed nervously.

"Who told you about that?""

"Answer me.""

"Danielle, you're letting your father manipulate you.""

"Did you switch my daughter with another baby?""

He sighed.

"Lower your voice.""

I almost dropped the phone.

"Did you?""

"Nothing happened that you need to worry about.""

I stood up.

"Nothing happened? Someone removed my newborn from her hospital room!""

"She was never in danger.""

"Then explain the blue bracelet.""

Another silence.

Finally, Daniel said, "I can explain everything if you'll meet me.""

"Where?""

"At the Grand Meridian. Suite 1808.""

My stomach turned.

"The same suite you booked for Vanessa?""

"Please, Danielle. Don't bring your father.""

I looked at him through the phone.

"Why?""

"Because this concerns our marriage.""

I almost laughed.

"Our marriage ended the moment I saw you with Vanessa.""

His voice became sharp.

"You don't understand what you've done. Your father is going to destroy everything.""

"Maybe everything deserves to be destroyed.""

He lowered his voice.

"Listen carefully. I didn't arrange the hospital transfer for money.""

"Then why?""

"Because Vanessa was supposed to receive the trust administration rights. In exchange, she promised to keep the other child safe.""

I froze.

"What other child?""

Daniel exhaled.

"Danielle, there's something you don't know about the baby boy.""

"Tell me.""

But instead of answering, he said:

"Ask your grandmother's attorney why your family never told you about your mother's first pregnancy.""

My heart stopped.

My mother had died when I was fourteen.

I had always been told that I was her only child.

"Daniel, what are you talking about?""

He ended the call.

I slowly lowered my phone.

My father had heard enough to understand that something was wrong.

"What did he say?""

I looked at him.

"He mentioned Mom.""

My father's expression changed.

"What about your mother?""

"He said Grandma's attorney knows something about her first pregnancy.""

My father sat down.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Then he rubbed his forehead.

"Danielle, there is something I should have told you years ago.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"What?""

He looked at Grace.

Then at me.

"Your mother did have another pregnancy before you were born.""

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because the baby died.""

I swallowed.

"What baby?""

My father looked away.

"A boy.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"Was his name Daniel?""

My father shook his head.

"No. His name was Michael.""

He paused.

"And according to your grandmother's old records, Michael's birth certificate was never officially closed.""

I couldn't breathe.

A dead child with an open birth certificate.

A newborn boy in a hospital.

A missing nurse.

And a husband who had arranged everything.

Then Helen's phone rang.

She listened carefully before looking at me.

"The hospital has expedited the preliminary DNA results.""

I stood up.

"What do they say?""

Helen's face turned pale.

"They confirm that Grace is biologically your daughter.""

Relief flooded my body.

Then she continued.

"But there's another finding.""

She placed the report on the table.

"Your daughter shares a biological relationship with the missing newborn boy.""

My father stared at her.

"How close?""

May you like

Helen looked at me.

"He's her maternal half-brother.""
