Chapter 10: The Woman Who Had Stolen My Brother
For several seconds, nobody in the conference room spoke.
I stared at the document Helen had placed on the table.
My grandmother's signature.
Vanessa Whitmore's name.
And a date that was supposed to represent a legal adoption.
My father picked up the paper.
"That's not possible.""
Helen pointed to the bottom.
"The document appears to have been notarized, but we haven't verified its authenticity. The police recovered it from Daniel's apartment along with several other records.""
Thomas looked physically ill.
"I knew Margaret had access to Eleanor's personal files, but I never imagined...""
He stopped.
My father turned toward him.
"Thomas, what aren't you telling us?""
The attorney slowly removed his glasses.
"Your grandmother became increasingly suspicious of Margaret during the final year of her life. Several original documents disappeared from her study. When I questioned Margaret, she claimed your mother had authorized her to reorganize the estate records.""
"Why didn't you tell me?"" my father demanded.
"Because I had no proof. And your mother specifically asked me not to make accusations without evidence.""
I looked at the document again.
"Why would Vanessa adopt Michael?""
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know.""
My phone vibrated.
Rachel Collins.
I answered immediately.
"Rachel, are you okay?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Danielle, someone is outside my house.""
My father stood.
"Who?""
"I don't know. A black SUV. Two men. They've been sitting there for twenty minutes.""
Helen immediately contacted the police in North Carolina.
"Rachel, lock your doors. Don't approach them. Officers are being dispatched.""
Then Rachel whispered something that made my stomach tighten.
"There's something I haven't told you.""
"What?""
"When I gave birth, Vanessa visited me at the hospital.""
I looked at my father.
Rachel continued.
"She told me she was a family friend. She offered to help with my medical bills. She said my baby would have a better future if I allowed certain arrangements.""
"What arrangements?""
"She wanted me to sign a temporary guardianship form.""
I closed my eyes.
"Did you sign it?""
"No. I refused. But she came back the next day with Daniel.""
My father slammed his hand against the table.
"That bastard.""
Rachel began crying.
"They told me I couldn't afford to raise a child. Daniel said the baby had relatives who could give him everything.""
I felt sick.
"Did they threaten you?""
"Yes. They said if I refused, they'd report me for neglect because I had no permanent employment.""
Helen wrote everything down.
Then Rachel said:
"Danielle, I think I know why they wanted your daughter.""
I leaned closer.
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa told me she had been promised a fortune if she could prove she was the legal guardian of a Brooks child.""
My father looked at Helen.
"The trust.""
Helen nodded.
"But why involve Michael?""
Rachel answered before anyone else could.
"Because Michael was supposed to be the child Vanessa raised. She wanted to become part of the Brooks family before Danielle had a baby.""
I stared at her.
"Are you saying Vanessa planned to raise my brother as her own?""
"That's what she told me.""
My father paced across the room.
"Then why did Daniel arrange the newborn transfer?""
Rachel went quiet.
When she spoke again, her voice was barely audible.
"Because Vanessa couldn't have children.""
The room fell silent.
She continued.
"She told me she'd spent years trying to become a mother. When she found out about the Brooks family trust, she believed raising a Brooks child would give her a permanent connection to the family fortune.""
Thomas slowly sat down.
"That would explain the forged adoption document.""
I looked at my father.
"But she wasn't Michael's biological mother.""
"No," he replied.
"And she wasn't his legal guardian either.""
My phone vibrated again.
A text from an unknown number.
*Stop asking questions. Your brother is alive because we allowed him to be.*
Then another message arrived.
*If you want to see him, come to the Grand Meridian tonight. Alone.*
I showed my father.
He shook his head immediately.
"Absolutely not.""
But I was already thinking.
Daniel, Vanessa, Margaret.
They were all at the hotel.
And they had something they desperately wanted to hide.
"I need to go there," I said.
My father stared at me.
"Danielle, no.""
"They've been controlling this story for years. Every time we get close to an answer, someone disappears or threatens us.""
"That's exactly why you aren't going.""
I looked at Grace.
Then I thought about Rachel, sitting alone in North Carolina, terrified someone would take her baby.
And Michael, a little boy who had been caught in a scheme before he could even understand the world.
I turned to my father.
"I'm not going alone. But I'm not hiding anymore.""
Helen closed her laptop.
"Then we do this properly. The police will coordinate the meeting.""
My father nodded reluctantly.
"One condition.""
"What?""
"Grace stays with me.""
I kissed my daughter's forehead.
"Keep her safe, Dad.""
He held her gently.
"I promise.""
That evening, we returned to the Grand Meridian.
But this time, I wasn't walking into the lobby as a frightened young mother.
I was walking in with the truth behind me.
And when the private elevator opened, Margaret Ellis was waiting.
She looked at me and smiled.
"Danielle. You've grown into quite a determined woman.""
I stared at her.
"Why did you help Vanessa steal my brother?""
Her smile disappeared.
Then she opened her handbag and pulled out an old photograph.
It showed my mother holding two newborn babies.
One was me.
The other was Michael.
May you like
Margaret placed it in my hand.
"Because your grandmother didn't tell you the whole story.""
