Chapter 4: The Letter My Grandmother Hid

The attorney arrived forty minutes later.

His name was Thomas Bennett, and he had represented my grandmother, Eleanor Brooks, for nearly thirty years.

He was seventy-two, walked with a silver-tipped cane, and carried a leather briefcase that looked older than I was.

When he entered the private lounge, he didn't greet my father first.

He looked directly at me.

"Danielle Brooks?""

I nodded.

"My grandmother's attorney?""

"Yes, sweetheart. And I believe I have something that belongs to you.""

He placed the briefcase on the table and carefully unlocked it.

My father stood beside me, holding Grace while I tried to control my shaking hands.

Thomas removed a thick envelope.

My name was written across the front in my grandmother's unmistakable handwriting.

I hadn't seen it in four years.

The sight of it nearly broke me.

"She wrote this?"" I whispered.

"Yes. Shortly before she passed away.""

"Why didn't anyone give it to me?""

Thomas exchanged a look with my father.

"Because your grandmother left very specific instructions. The letter was to remain sealed unless someone attempted to claim legal or financial authority over a child born to you.""

I stared at him.

"She knew this would happen?""

"I believe she suspected someone might try.""

My father placed Grace in her portable carrier and pulled out a chair.

"Thomas, explain.""

The attorney took a breath.

"Your grandmother established a private family trust several months before her death. It was intended to protect the Brooks family assets and provide financial security for future generations.""

I frowned.

"How much money are we talking about?""

Thomas opened a document.

"The trust currently holds approximately $38 million in investments, commercial property interests, and insurance proceeds.""

I stared at him.

"Thirty-eight million?""

My father looked uncomfortable.

"I knew Mother had created a trust. I didn't know she'd made Danielle's future child its principal beneficiary.""

Thomas nodded.

"She specifically named Danielle's first child.""

Then he pointed to a paragraph.

"However, she included a condition. If anyone attempted to obtain guardianship, financial control, or custodial authority over that child through fraud, the trust would immediately enter protective review.""

I swallowed.

"And Vanessa?""

Thomas looked at the forged document.

"Her name appears as a proposed financial administrator. But she was never legally appointed.""

"Then why would she want access to the trust?""

He turned another page.

"Because the person who controls the trust's administrative authority can influence investment decisions and access certain financial information.""

My father slammed his hand against the table.

"Who submitted the application?""

Thomas checked the file.

"Daniel Brooks.""

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I could hear nothing except Grace's tiny breathing.

The man I'd married had apparently been preparing to gain control over my daughter's inheritance before she was even born.

I opened my grandmother's letter.

The first line made my chest tighten.

My darling Danielle, if you're reading this, someone has already tried to use the people you love against you.

I began reading aloud.

I never trusted Daniel. I saw the way he looked at our family fortune, and I watched how quickly his affection changed whenever money was discussed.

My hands trembled.

I also know about Vanessa Whitmore. Years ago, she approached me with a business proposal that involved your father's company. She wasn't interested in building anything. She was interested in finding a way into our family.

I looked up.

"Grandma knew Vanessa?""

My father frowned.

"Apparently.""

Thomas continued reading from a separate copy.

"Your grandmother instructed me to investigate any attempt to place Vanessa in control of a Brooks family trust.""

Then he handed me another page.

It contained a handwritten note.

If Daniel and Vanessa ever approach you together, remember this: they are not working toward the same goal. One wants the money. The other wants the power.

I stared at those words.

"What does that mean?""

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas removed a final document.

It was a photocopy of an old business agreement.

The signature at the bottom belonged to my father.

"Alexander," Thomas said quietly, "you need to see this.""

My father took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

"What the hell?""

"What is it?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Three years ago, I rejected a proposal from Whitmore Development. They wanted access to several of our hotel properties.""

Thomas nodded.

"Your mother discovered that the proposal had been supported by Daniel through a separate investment company.""

I felt sick.

"Daniel was working with them before we got married?""

My father didn't answer.

His silence was enough.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice whispered urgently.

"Mrs. Brooks? My name is Emily. I'm the receptionist from the hotel.""

"Emily? What happened?""

"I wasn't supposed to contact you, but I found something in the reservation system.""

"What?""

She lowered her voice.

"Mrs. Whitmore didn't come to the hotel today by accident.""

I stood up.

"What do you mean?""

Emily hesitated.

"She had a meeting scheduled with Mr. Reed. And there was another reservation under your daughter's name.""

My blood ran cold.

"Grace?""

"Yes, ma'am. Someone had booked a private suite for tonight.""

I looked at my father.

"Who booked it?""

Emily whispered the name.

May you like

"Your husband.""

Then the call ended.
