Chapter 12: The Inheritance Trap
My father read the trust clause again.
Then he looked at Thomas.
"Is this legitimate?""
Thomas adjusted his glasses.
"I need to examine the original.""
Vanessa smiled.
"By all means. But I suggest you do it quickly.""
Daniel stepped away from the windows.
"Vanessa, what have you done?""
She ignored him.
Instead, she looked at me.
"You should have stayed home with your baby, Danielle. None of this would have happened if you hadn't walked into that hotel.""
I stared at her.
"You slapped me because you were afraid I'd discover the truth.""
She shrugged.
"I slapped you because you were making a scene.""
My father moved toward her.
"One more word.""
Helen took the document from Thomas and examined the signature.
"There's something wrong here.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"What?""
"The clause references an amendment dated eleven years ago. But the notary stamp belongs to an office that closed thirteen years ago.""
Thomas nodded slowly.
"She's right.""
My father looked at Vanessa.
"Where did you get this document?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Thomas examined the final page.
"This isn't an original. It's a reconstructed copy.""
Daniel suddenly turned toward Vanessa.
"You told me this was valid.""
She snapped back.
"It was supposed to be!""
My father stared at them.
"So both of you knew this was questionable?""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"I thought the amendment was real.""
I looked at him.
"You thought?""
He raised his hands.
"Danielle, you don't understand. Vanessa told me the trust could be administered through the independent trustee arrangement. She said it would protect the money from family disputes.""
"And you believed her?""
"She showed me documents.""
"While you were sleeping with her?""
He looked down.
I shook my head.
"You're unbelievable.""
Helen stood.
"Regardless of the document's authenticity, there is another problem. Someone attempted to submit this amendment to the trust administrator last week.""
My father frowned.
"Who?""
She turned her laptop around.
"The submission came from an account registered to Daniel Brooks.""
Vanessa looked furious.
"Daniel!""
He stared at the screen.
"I didn't submit that.""
"Your credentials were used," Helen replied.
"Then someone stole them.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Don't start pretending you're innocent now.""
Daniel stepped toward her.
"You promised me the money!""
"And you promised me the baby!""
The room fell silent.
I felt my blood run cold.
My father slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Which baby?""
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Then closed.
She had said too much.
Helen immediately signaled the investigators.
"Please repeat what you just said.""
Vanessa stood.
"I didn't mean—"
"Which baby were you expecting Daniel to deliver to you?""
Daniel grabbed her arm.
"Shut up.""
A police officer separated them.
Vanessa began shouting.
"He told me everything! He said once Danielle's daughter was listed under the trust, we could control the inheritance!""
I stepped forward.
"Why did you need Grace?""
"Because she's the beneficiary!""
"And Michael?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because your grandmother's trust was never meant to protect just one child.""
Thomas slowly opened his briefcase.
He searched through the original documents and pulled out a separate page.
"Wait.""
Everyone turned toward him.
He studied the paper.
"Your grandmother included a provision for biological descendants who had been separated from the family without their knowledge.""
My father frowned.
"Explain.""
Thomas pointed to a paragraph.
"If a previously undisclosed biological descendant is identified, the trust must be reviewed to determine whether that person was unlawfully excluded.""
I looked at the document.
"Michael.""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes.""
Helen leaned closer.
"That means the attempted guardianship arrangement was unnecessary. Michael already has a potential beneficial interest under the original trust.""
My father slowly understood.
"Vanessa wanted legal guardianship because she believed that would give her access to the trust administration.""
Thomas nodded.
"But she could never become its owner.""
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
"That isn't what Margaret told me!""
The room fell silent again.
I turned toward her.
"What did Margaret tell you?""
Vanessa looked trapped.
Then she began speaking rapidly.
"She told me Eleanor had promised me a position in the family trust. She said if I raised Michael, I would eventually have authority over his inheritance.""
"Why would you believe that?""
"Because she showed me letters!""
Thomas frowned.
"What letters?""
"Letters from Eleanor. She said Michael would be mine if I helped keep the family from discovering what happened.""
My father looked devastated.
"Mother's letters?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Margaret said Eleanor was afraid Alexander would reject Michael. She said your mother had wanted the boy hidden.""
My father lowered his head.
For the first time, I saw something other than anger in his face.
Grief.
"Mother knew," he whispered.
Thomas shook his head.
"We don't know exactly what she knew. We need the original letters.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
"You'll never find them.""
Helen looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because Margaret didn't keep them.""
"Where are they?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Daniel has them.""
Everyone turned toward him.
Daniel looked genuinely confused.
"I don't have anything.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Don't lie. You took the box from Margaret's house.""
Daniel's expression changed.
I watched him carefully.
"Where is it, Daniel?""
He looked at me.
Then he reached inside his jacket.
The police officers immediately moved closer.
But instead of a weapon, he removed a small photograph.
He placed it on the table.
It showed my grandmother standing beside a young woman holding a newborn baby.
The woman was my mother.
The baby was Michael.
On the back, in my grandmother's handwriting, were six words:
The child was never meant to disappear.
Daniel looked at me.
"Your grandmother didn't give Michael away because she wanted to protect the fortune.""
I stared at him.
"Then why?""
He swallowed.
"Because she discovered that someone in the family had already arranged to have him removed before he was born.""
My father went completely still.
"Who?""
Daniel looked toward the boardroom door.
Then he whispered a name.
"Your mother.""
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.
"My mother was dead before Michael disappeared.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No, Danielle. I'm talking about what happened before you were born.""
He pointed to the photograph.
"Your mother knew Michael was alive. She spent years trying to find him.""
I looked at Thomas.
He appeared just as shocked as I was.
Then Daniel delivered the final blow.
"The person who arranged Michael's original adoption wasn't Vanessa, Margaret, or your grandmother.""
He looked directly at my father.
"It was someone your father trusted more than anyone.""
My father slowly raised his eyes.
"Who?""
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, Helen's phone rang.
She listened for several seconds.
Then she looked at me.
"Rachel has just arrived at the police station in Raleigh.""
I stood.
"Is Michael with her?""
Helen nodded.
"Yes. And she brought the original birth certificate.""
She paused.
"But there's a problem.""
"What problem?""
Helen turned the phone toward me.
A photograph showed the birth certificate.
Under the section marked BIOLOGICAL FATHER was a name.
Not Daniel Brooks.
Not Alexander Brooks.
It was the name of the man who had raised my mother.
My grandfather.
May you like
And according to the document, Michael wasn't just my brother.
He was the heir to a secret my family had buried for twenty-six years.
