Chapter 9: The Secret Between My Parents

I spent my entire life believing my parents were the one thing in the world that could never break.

They were the couple everyone admired.

Forty years together.

Same house.

Same routines.

Same quiet understanding.

My father still made my mother coffee every morning.

My mother still packed his lunch before work.

They were proof that forever existed.

Until that night.

Until my father looked at me and said:

“I can explain.””

The same words that had destroyed my trust in Claire.

I stepped back.

“What happened?””

My father looked at my mother.

She nodded slowly.

“Tell him.””

He took a long breath.

“I found out about Claire before the wedding.””

My chest tightened.

“You knew?””

My father looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

The anger came instantly.

“You knew?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A broken sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My father lowered his head.

“I know.””

My mother reached for my hand.

“Daniel, listen.””

“No.””

I pulled away.

“I spent weeks thinking Mom abandoned me.””

My voice cracked.

“I thought she didn’t care enough to come.””

My mother started crying.

“And he knew why.””

I looked at my father.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He was silent.

That silence answered everything.

“Dad.””

He finally spoke.

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“You?””

“Yes.””

The word sounded impossible coming from him.

My father had always been the strongest person I knew.

“I received a message too.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

He pulled out his phone.

There was an old screenshot.

A message from an unknown number.

*If Daniel finds out the truth before the wedding, he will lose everything.*

I looked at the date.

Three weeks earlier.

Before my mother disappeared.

Before the wedding.

Before everything exploded.

“You got this?””

He nodded.

“And you still let me marry her?””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“I was trying to stop it.””

“By doing what?””

He looked at my mother.

“We hired someone.””

I looked at Ethan.

The room went silent.

“You hired an investigator?””

My father nodded.

“We needed proof.””

I shook my head.

“So you both were investigating Claire while I was planning my wedding?””

My mother stepped closer.

“Because we were scared.””

“For me?””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

I understood.

I hated that I understood.

But understanding didn’t erase the pain.

My father continued.

“When your mother found the documents, Claire realized we knew.””

“And then she threatened Mom.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Yes.””

I looked at Claire.

She looked smaller now.

Not innocent.

But smaller.

My father turned toward her.

“You thought you could isolate him.””

Claire didn’t answer.

“You convinced him his mother was unstable.””

Silence.

“You made him doubt the people who loved him.””

More silence.

I looked at Claire.

“Did you?””

She looked at me.

Her voice was barely audible.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt.

But this time, I was ready.

Because I had finally stopped hoping for a different answer.

My father placed the phone on the table.

“There’s one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

Another thing.

Another secret.

“What?””

He looked at Claire.

“She wasn’t working alone.””

Claire’s head snapped up.

“Don’t.””

My father ignored her.

“The messages sent to your mother came from Claire’s phone.””

He paused.

“But someone else helped write them.””

I looked at Claire.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Well-dressed.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had been sitting at Claire’s family table during the ceremony.

Her uncle.

Richard Bennett.

Claire went pale.

“Uncle Richard.””

He smiled sadly.

“Hello, Claire.””

My father stood.

“What are you doing here?””

Richard looked at me.

“I came to tell Daniel the truth before you all give him only half of it.””

I stared at him.

“Half?””

He walked closer.

“Claire made mistakes.””

Claire looked terrified.

“But the person who taught her how to survive this way…”

He looked directly at my father.

“Was someone else.””

My father’s face changed.

May you like

And then Richard said the one sentence nobody expected:

“Robert Carter knows exactly what Claire did because he helped her hide it.””
