Chapter 2: The Secret Message

The room felt smaller after my father’s accusation.

Hundreds of people were watching.

My friends.

My coworkers.

Claire’s family.

Everyone waiting for someone to explain.

But Claire stood frozen.

The woman who had confidently walked down the aisle hours earlier suddenly looked like she wanted to disappear.

I looked at my father.

“Show me.””

My voice sounded strange.

Almost like it belonged to someone else.

My father handed me the printed screenshot.

At first, I only saw the words.

*If you come to Daniel’s wedding, you’ll regret it. Stay away from him.*

My hands went cold.

Then I saw the number.

I knew the number.

I had called it a thousand times.

Claire’s number.

“No,” I whispered.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, wait.””

I looked at her.

“Is this your phone number?””

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

That was answer enough.

“Daniel,” she said quickly, “you don’t understand what this looks like.””

I almost laughed.

“What it looks like?””

She lowered her voice.

“Can we please not do this in front of everyone?””

My father stepped closer.

“That’s exactly what she wants.””

Claire looked at him.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

My father held up the letter.

“I know your future mother-in-law was afraid to walk into this building today.””

“That’s not true,” Claire snapped.

The sharpness in her voice surprised everyone.

Including me.

My mother flinched.

And I noticed.

I noticed because my mother had spent her whole life making excuses for people.

Even when they hurt her.

Especially when they hurt her.

I looked at her.

“Mom.””

She squeezed my hand.

“Daniel, I didn’t want this.””

“Didn’t want what?””

She looked at Claire.

“This.””

The word was barely audible.

Claire’s face hardened.

“You’re making things worse.””

My father moved between them.

“No. The truth is making things worse.””

The DJ quietly stepped away from the equipment. The staff pretended not to watch.

Nobody pretended very well.

I unfolded the letter from my mother.

The first line broke something inside me.

*Dear Daniel, I’m sorry you are reading this on your wedding day.*

I looked up.

“Mom, why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid you wouldn’t believe me.””

The words hit harder than the accusation itself.

I stared at her.

“Why would you think that?””

She looked at Claire.

And I understood.

My mother wasn’t afraid of the message.

She was afraid of losing me.

Claire walked closer.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

I turned toward her.

“Were you the one who sent it?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Then why is your number on it?””

She swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

My father gave a bitter laugh.

“You expect him to believe that?””

Claire looked at me.

“Daniel, you know me.””

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to say I did.

But suddenly I remembered every strange moment.

The way Claire changed the subject whenever my mother came up.

The way she insisted my mother needed “distance.””

The way she never let me speak to my mother alone during the last month.

“Why did you tell me she couldn’t handle coming?”” I asked.

Claire’s eyes softened.

“Because she was causing stress.””

My mother looked down.

I felt something crack.

“My mother was causing stress?””

Claire sighed.

“Daniel, this wedding was already overwhelming.””

I stared at her.

“She’s my mother.””

“And I’m your wife.””

The words landed between us.

Not like love.

Like a warning.

My father stepped forward.

“Before you marry someone, you should know what they’re capable of.””

Claire looked at him.

“Careful.””

My father smiled sadly.

“No. You be careful.””

He reached into the envelope again.

This time he pulled out another paper.

“I didn’t just bring the message.””

Claire’s face changed.

“What is that?””

My father looked at me.

“Your mother wasn’t the only person who received something.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What do you mean?””

He handed me the second page.

It was a bank transaction.

A payment.

Sent two days before the wedding.

To a private investigator.

The name at the top made my stomach twist.

“Why would someone hire an investigator?”” I asked.

My father looked directly at Claire.

“That’s what I wanted to know.””

Claire stepped backward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

But my father wasn’t looking at her anymore.

He was looking at me.

“Because the investigator found something about Claire that she never wanted you to see.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“What?””

My father opened his mouth.

Then the ballroom doors suddenly slammed open.

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark jacket stood there holding a folder.

He looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on Claire.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

May you like

Claire went pale.

“But you need to know the woman you married almost became someone else’s wife before she ever met you.””
