Chapter 14: The Person Behind Everything

The next morning, I sat in a police interview room wearing the same suit from my wedding.

A wedding that never happened.

The ring was still on my finger.

I hadn’t taken it off.

Not because I still wanted it.

Because I hadn’t figured out what it meant.

A promise?

A mistake?

A reminder?

Detective Alvarez placed a folder on the table.

“Daniel, I know this is overwhelming.””

I looked at her.

“Overwhelming stopped being the right word hours ago.””

She nodded.

Fair enough.

“We traced the messages.””

“And?””

“They came from multiple devices.””

“Claire’s phone.””

“Partially.””

I frowned.

“Partially?””

“Someone cloned her number.””

That changed everything.

“So Claire didn’t send them?””

The detective paused.

“She sent some.””

My stomach tightened.

“And the threats?””

“Not all of them.””

I leaned back.

“So everyone was partly telling the truth.””

“Yes.””

That was somehow worse.

Detective Alvarez opened the folder.

“The person manipulating this situation wanted everyone suspicious of each other.””

She placed photographs on the table.

Photos of my parents.

Claire.

Richard.

Ethan.

And someone else.

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

I stared.

“Who is that?””

Detective Alvarez watched my reaction.

“You don’t recognize him?””

“No.””

She turned the photograph around.

“His name is Michael Hayes.””

My heart stopped.

“That’s my biological father.””

She nodded.

“According to our records, he died fourteen years ago.””

I looked at the photo.

“Then how?””

“We found evidence he didn’t die.””

The room felt smaller.

“What?””

“His death certificate was falsified.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“That’s what we’re trying to find out.””

I thought about the messages.

The warning.

The note.

The wedding.

Everything.

“Why come back now?””

Detective Alvarez opened another file.

“Because of this.””

She handed me a document.

A company ownership transfer.

My name was on it.

I stared.

“What is this?””

“Your father left something behind.””

“My biological father?””

“Yes.””

I read the document.

A trust.

Created before I was born.

A trust that named me as the beneficiary.

The amount was large enough to change my entire life.

But there was one condition.

I looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Detective Alvarez answered:

“You receive control of the assets when you discover the truth about your identity.””

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was insane.

“My entire life was a test?””

“No.””

She looked serious.

“Someone wanted you to find this.””

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone in the room became still.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A voice spoke.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar in a way I couldn’t explain.

“Daniel.””

I froze.

Because I had heard that voice before.

In dreams.

In old recordings.

In stories my mother never finished.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your father.””

My hands went cold.

“You’re dead.””

“I know what they told you.””

I stood.

“Who are you?””

The voice cracked.

“Someone who made a terrible mistake.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why did you come back?””

Another pause.

“Because Claire wasn’t the person you should have been afraid of.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

The voice lowered.

“Because the person who destroyed your family…”

A pause.

“…is the person who raised you.””

I looked through the glass window.

At my father sitting outside.

My heart shattered.

“No.””

The voice continued:

“Daniel, you need to hear me before it’s too late.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Detective Alvarez watched me.

“Who was that?””

I slowly lowered the phone.

And whispered:

“My father.””

She frowned.

“Your father is sitting outside.””

I looked through the window.

At Robert.

The man who raised me.

The man who loved me.

The man who might have hidden everything.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered if love and truth had ever been on the same side.
