Chapter 12: The Evidence Against My Mother

I couldn’t move.

The entire room watched my face.

Waiting.

Trying to understand.

But I couldn’t understand.

Not yet.

“My mother?””

The detective’s voice remained calm.

“Yes.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked confused.

Then frightened.

“Detective, that’s impossible.””

“I know this is difficult.””

“No,” I said.

“You don’t understand.””

I looked at my mother.

“She wouldn’t.””

There was silence on the phone.

Then the detective said:

“We have evidence.””

The words crushed the little certainty I had left.

Evidence.

Everyone had evidence.

Everyone had documents.

Screenshots.

Recordings.

Proof.

And every piece had changed what I believed.

My mother stepped closer.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer.

She saw my face.

And immediately knew.

“Daniel?””

I lowered the phone.

“The police think you sent the messages.””

Her expression collapsed.

“What?””

My father immediately moved beside her.

“That’s impossible.””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

Even Claire looked shocked.

I raised the phone again.

“Detective, explain.””

“We recovered deleted messages from a device connected to your mother.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Daniel, no.””

The pain in her voice almost broke me.

Because it sounded like the woman who had spent her whole life telling me the truth.

“I didn’t do that.””

“I believe you.””

The words came out automatically.

And I meant them.

But belief wasn’t enough anymore.

Not after everything.

The detective continued.

“We need everyone involved to come in tomorrow morning.””

“Tomorrow?””

“Yes.””

She paused.

“There’s more.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“We found another file.””

“What file?””

“A recording.””

I looked at Claire.

Another recording.

Another secret.

The detective continued.

“It appears someone was trying to frame your mother.””

I exhaled.

“So she didn’t send them?””

“We don’t know yet.””

My father took the phone from me.

“Detective, this is Robert Carter. You need to understand—”

The detective interrupted.

“Mr. Carter, we know about your agreement with Claire Bennett.””

My father froze.

The room froze.

“You know about that?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because someone submitted it as evidence.””

My father looked at Richard.

Then Claire.

Nobody spoke.

I took the phone back.

“Who submitted it?””

The detective paused.

Then answered.

“Your mother.””

Everyone turned.

My mother’s face went white.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t.””

The detective continued.

“We have the submission record.””

My mother looked at me.

“Daniel, I swear.””

I wanted to believe her.

I needed to.

But the night had taught me something painful.

The truth was not always the person who looked innocent.

The detective said:

“Mr. Carter, whoever is behind this has been planning for a long time.””

I looked around the ballroom.

A place that had been built for promises.

Now filled with secrets.

“Why call me?””

“Because we found something else.””

“What?””

“A note.””

My hand tightened.

“What note?””

The detective’s voice became quieter.

“It was found inside your wedding invitation.””

I looked at the table.

At the empty envelopes.

At the flowers.

At everything Claire had planned.

“What did it say?””

A pause.

Then:

*Ask Daniel who he really is.*

I felt cold.

“What?””

The detective continued.

“The note claims your entire family has been lying to you.””

My father stepped forward.

My mother looked terrified.

Claire looked like she knew something.

I noticed.

And she noticed that I noticed.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

“Do you know what that means?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

My heart sank.

“What do you mean yes?””

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because your parents aren’t the only ones who kept a secret.””

She took a shaky breath.

“There’s something about you that nobody ever told you.””

May you like

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“Daniel… your father isn’t your biological father.””
