Chapter 7: The Wedding That Became A Trial

I thought the worst moment of my life would be standing at the altar and realizing I was marrying the wrong person.

I was wrong.

The worst moment was standing in front of everyone I loved and realizing the person I trusted most had spent months carefully building a version of herself that never existed.

The ballroom lights felt too bright.

The music had stopped.

The guests who had arrived to celebrate my marriage were now witnesses to its collapse.

I looked at the court notice in Ethan’s hand.

“What charge?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“What charge?””

She didn’t answer.

My father stepped closer.

“Answer him.””

Claire looked at him.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You threatened my wife.””

“I never hurt her.””

My mother finally spoke.

Her voice was quiet.

“You made me believe my son was in danger.””

Claire looked at her.

“I never wanted that.””

“But you wanted me gone.””

The words landed harder than shouting would have.

Claire looked away.

I stared at the woman I was supposed to spend my life with.

“Tomorrow’s court hearing. What is it about?””

Ethan answered.

“Fraud.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Claire immediately turned toward him.

“You promised you wouldn’t tell him.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“I promised I wouldn’t expose you while you were trying to fix things.””

“And now?””

“Now he’s standing here wearing a ring from someone who lied to him.””

I looked down at my wedding ring.

A piece of metal that had felt like a promise three hours earlier.

Now it felt like evidence.

“Explain the fraud,” I said.

Claire wiped her face.

“It wasn’t what you think.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that right before explaining exactly what I think.””

She took a breath.

“When I married Mark, we started a company together.””

I waited.

“It struggled.””

Ethan nodded.

“She started moving money.””

Claire looked at him.

“I borrowed money.””

“You transferred it without telling me.””

“I was trying to save the company.””

“And when it failed?””

She said nothing.

I looked at Claire.

“So you lied to him.””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Maybe because it was the first honest thing she had said all night.

“But I fixed it.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No, you covered it.””

Claire’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t know what I was dealing with.””

“No,” Ethan replied.

“But I know what happened after.””

“What happened after?”” I asked.

My mother answered.

“She came to our house.””

I turned.

“When?””

“The week after you introduced her.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

My mother looked at Claire.

“She wanted me to convince you to move away from Nashville.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she said there were people looking for her.””

Claire immediately interrupted.

“I was protecting him.””

“From what?””

She looked at me.

“From my past.””

I shook my head.

“No. You were protecting yourself from me finding out.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Claire lowered her eyes.

And that was when I knew.

Not because she admitted it.

Because she didn’t deny it.

A staff member quietly approached my father.

“Sir, should we ask everyone to leave?””

My father looked at me.

I didn’t know what to say.

This was my wedding.

My guests.

My family.

My nightmare.

I nodded.

“Give us a few minutes.””

The ballroom slowly emptied.

Friends hugged me.

Some apologized.

Some avoided eye contact because they didn’t know what to say.

Eventually, only a few people remained.

My parents.

Claire.

Ethan.

Lisa.

And me.

I looked at Claire.

“Did you ever love me?””

Her face broke.

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

That almost hurt more.

“Then why?””

She sat down.

For the first time that night, she looked exhausted.

“Because when I met you, I thought I could start over.””

I stared at her.

“You didn’t start over.””

“I know.””

“You created someone else.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was afraid.””

“Everyone is afraid, Claire.””

My voice softened despite everything.

“But most people don’t destroy the people who love them because of it.””

She looked at my mother.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

My mother looked at her sadly.

“But you did.””

Claire covered her face.

Then Ethan spoke.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“Another secret?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

My stomach sank.

“What now?””

Ethan looked at the court papers.

“The fraud case isn’t the reason Claire was desperate to marry you.””

Claire stood immediately.

“Stop.””

But Ethan continued.

“She needed your name.””

The room went silent.

My blood ran cold.

“My name?””

He nodded.

“She filed paperwork to merge a new business under a different identity.””

I stared at Claire.

“You were using me.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“I loved you.””

“Both can be true.””

She froze.

Because she knew.

Ethan pulled out another document.

“I found this yesterday.””

He handed it to me.

At the top was a business application.

And below it was a signature.

Not Claire Bennett.

A different name.

A name I had never heard before.

I looked up.

“Who is this?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Then my mother whispered:

“That’s the name she used when she first met me.””
