Chapter 3: The Man From Her Past
Nobody moved.
The stranger stood in the doorway holding a folder like it contained something dangerous.
Maybe it did.
Because Claire looked terrified.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Terrified.
I turned toward her.
“Who is that?””
She didn’t answer.
“Claire?””
Her eyes stayed locked on the man.
My father took a step forward.
“You know him.””
The stranger walked into the ballroom.
His shoes clicked against the polished floor.
“I’m Ethan.””
Claire finally spoke.
“Please leave.””
The man stopped.
“You told me you were going to tell him.””
My chest tightened.
“Tell me what?””
Claire looked at me.
“Daniel, this isn’t what you think.””
That sentence again.
The same sentence people used when the truth was exactly what you thought.
Ethan looked down at the folder.
“I didn’t want to ruin your wedding.””
My father gave a cold smile.
“You’re a little late.””
Ethan ignored him.
“I came because your mother asked me to.””
I looked at my mother.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“No, Daniel. I didn’t want this.””
Ethan nodded.
“She didn’t. I was the one who convinced her.””
Claire laughed nervously.
“This is insane.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Start talking.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Records.
Things I didn’t understand yet.
“Six months ago, Claire contacted me.””
Claire immediately interrupted.
“That’s not true.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You told me your name was different.””
The room went silent.
My hands became numb.
“What?””
Claire stepped toward me.
“Daniel, please.””
I moved back.
“No.””
That one word surprised everyone.
Including me.
Ethan placed a photograph on the table.
A woman stood beside him.
Claire.
But the picture was older.
Different.
Her hair was shorter.
She was wearing a ring.
A wedding ring.
I looked at Claire.
“You were married?””
She shook her head.
“Not anymore.””
“How long?””
“Daniel—”
“How long?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Two years.””
I stared at her.
The music.
The flowers.
The guests.
Everything around me suddenly felt fake.
“You told me you had never been married.””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She didn’t answer.
Ethan spoke quietly.
“When she realized I had proof.””
Claire looked at him.
“Stop.””
But Ethan continued.
“She didn’t just hide a divorce.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What else?””
Ethan opened another document.
“She hid why the divorce happened.””
Claire rushed forward.
“Daniel, don’t read that.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She froze.
Because she didn’t have an answer.
I took the paper.
The first line was enough.
*Protective order request.*
My breath caught.
My mother covered her mouth.
My father looked away.
And Claire whispered my name.
“Daniel.””
I looked up.
The woman I had promised forever to was standing in front of me.
The woman who had told me my mother was too unstable to attend my wedding.
The woman whose phone number appeared on a threatening message.
The woman who had hidden an entire marriage from me.
“Tell me the truth,” I said.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
I held up the document.
“Explain this.””
She looked at the crowd watching us.
Then she looked at my father.
Then my mother.
Finally, she looked back at me.
May you like
And she said something that made the entire room go silent.
“Your mother wasn’t supposed to come here because she was the only person who knew what I did before I met you.””
