Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Story

Nobody touched the folder.

It sat in the middle of the table like a bomb.

Claire stared at it.

Then at Lisa.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Lisa’s expression didn’t change.

“That’s exactly what you told my brother.””

I looked at Claire.

“Your brother?””

Lisa nodded.

“Mark Morgan.””

The name felt familiar.

Because I had seen it.

In the documents.

On the messages.

In the parts of Claire’s life she had erased.

I opened the folder.

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Are you sure?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

That was the truth.

I wasn’t sure about anything anymore.

But I needed to know.

The first page was a police report.

The second was a statement.

Mark’s statement.

I read the first few lines.

*I am requesting protection because I believe Claire Bennett has been manipulating people around me and attempting to hide financial crimes connected to our marriage.*

I stopped.

“Financial crimes?””

Claire stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Lisa looked at her.

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you disappear when investigators contacted you?””

Claire’s face tightened.

“I was overwhelmed.””

The same excuse.

The same word.

The word she had used for my mother.

My father noticed it too.

He looked at me.

“She always has a reason.””

I continued reading.

The report explained that Mark had discovered money missing from a shared business account.

Claire claimed it was a mistake.

Mark claimed it was intentional.

But there was something else.

Something that made my hands shake.

A signature.

A signature on a transfer form.

Claire’s signature.

I looked up.

“You told me you worked in event planning.””

“I do.””

“You also told me you never handled money.””

She looked away.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because of the money.

Because every memory I had with her now had a question mark attached.

Lisa stepped closer.

“Daniel, I know what you’re thinking.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“That maybe she changed.””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I did.””

Lisa shook her head.

“You learned how to hide better.””

The words hit hard.

Claire turned toward her.

“You don’t know me anymore.””

“No,” Lisa said quietly.

“But I knew the woman my brother married.””

My mother reached for my hand.

I let her.

For the first time that night, I realized how close I had come to losing the person who had always protected me.

I looked at Claire.

“Why my mother?””

She looked confused.

“What?””

“Why did you target my mother?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

“She was asking questions.””

My father stepped forward.

“What questions?””

Claire looked at the floor.

My voice became colder.

“Tell me.””

She finally looked at me.

“She found out about Mark.””

The room went silent.

My mother closed her eyes.

“I saw the name on some papers at her apartment.””

Claire shook her head.

“You didn’t understand.””

“No,” my mother said.

“I understood enough.””

I looked at my mother.

“What did you see?””

She took a breath.

“Claire was still legally connected to Mark when she started dating you.””

My stomach dropped.

I turned to Claire.

“You told me your divorce was final.””

“It was almost final.””

“Almost?””

Her eyes filled.

“I was going to fix it.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You were going to fix it after marrying me?””

“Daniel, I loved you.””

I stared at her.

Maybe she believed it.

Maybe that was the worst part.

Maybe Claire had convinced herself that love allowed her to rewrite everything.

My father picked up the microphone again.

“Everyone here needs to hear one more thing.””

Claire’s head snapped toward him.

“No.””

He ignored her.

“The reason Daniel’s mother was threatened wasn’t because she was unstable.””

He looked at me.

“It was because she found proof.””

I looked at my mother.

“What proof?””

She reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found this hidden in Claire’s old apartment.””

Claire’s face changed instantly.

Not fear.

Panic.

She took one step toward my mother.

“Where did you get that?””

Nobody spoke.

Because we all heard it.

The way she asked.

Not “What is that?””

Not “Why do you have it?””

But:

Where did you get that?

My father noticed.

Ethan noticed.

Everyone noticed.

I looked at the flash drive.

“What’s on it?””

My mother looked at Claire.

May you like

Then at me.

“Something Claire spent months trying to erase.””
