Chapter 9: The Truth Buried Sixteen Years Ago
My father dropped the phone.
Not because he wanted to.
Because his hand stopped working.
The call ended.
But nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
Finally, Vanessa whispered,
“This is insane.””
Dad looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was empty.
“That’s what you always say when the truth gets close.””
She stepped back.
“Maya, don’t listen to this.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked confused.
“Why what?””
“Why should I believe you?””
That question hurt her.
I saw it.
But I didn’t care.
Because for sixteen years, I had believed everyone else.
Now I needed the truth.
Dad picked up his phone.
“Call him back.””
I looked at him.
“The number is gone.””
He searched through the call history.
Nothing.
Like the person had never existed.
Evelyn looked worried.
“He knew we found the letter.””
Dad looked at her.
“How?””
She didn’t answer.
And then we all realized.
Someone had been watching.
The next hour was chaos.
My father called the airline.
He called an attorney.
He called people from the past.
Every conversation revealed another piece of a puzzle that had been hidden from me my entire life.
But one thing became clear.
Vanessa was not just trying to ruin my vacation.
She was trying to stop me from discovering something.
That night, I sat in my room staring at my mother’s letter.
I read every sentence again.
Looking for clues.
Looking for something I missed.
Then I noticed something.
A small mark near the bottom of the page.
A tiny circle drawn in ink.
I ran my finger over it.
“What is that?””
Evelyn, who was sitting nearby, leaned closer.
Her expression changed.
“That’s your mother’s symbol.””
I looked at her.
“What symbol?””
“She used it when she hid information.””
My heart raced.
“You mean there’s more?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Your mother never trusted a single hiding place.””
I turned the paper over.
Nothing.
Then Evelyn took the photograph.
She looked at the back.
Her eyes widened.
“What?””
She pointed.
The edge of the photo had been folded.
I carefully opened it.
Behind the picture was a hidden piece of paper.
A second message.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The handwriting was my mother’s.
But this time, the words were not for me.
They were instructions.
*“If Vanessa is still in Maya’s life, do not give her the original evidence.””*
I stopped.
Original evidence.
There was more.
Dad leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
I kept reading.
*“The copy is hidden where Marcus will never look.””*
Everyone stared.
“Where?”” Dad asked.
The next line answered.
*“In the place where Maya’s childhood began.””*
I felt a chill.
My childhood.
There was only one place.
The house where I lived before Mom died.
But that house had been sold years ago.
I looked at my father.
“Dad…”
He already knew.
His face turned pale.
“No.””
“What?””
He stood slowly.
“We never sold it.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked terrified.
“I told everyone we did.””
“Why?””
His eyes filled with fear.
“Because someone broke into that house after your mother died.””
The room went silent.
“Someone was looking for something.””
My heartbeat grew louder.
“Did they find it?””
Dad looked at the hidden message.
Then at me.
“No.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“Because your mother hid it somewhere they couldn’t reach.””
Evelyn stood.
“Then we need to go there.””
Dad grabbed his keys.
But before we could leave, his phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
One sentence.
*“If you go to that house, you’ll finally learn why your mother was afraid of me.””*
My father stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*“But you’ll also learn what Maya’s mother did to protect her.””*
