Chapter 11: The Person We Never Suspected
Nobody moved.
The sound came again.
A slow step.
Then another.
My father immediately put the documents into the box.
“Stay here.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
“Maya.””
“I’m not a child.””
He looked at me.
And for once, he didn’t argue.
Because he knew I was right.
Evelyn picked up a heavy lamp from the desk.
It would have been funny under different circumstances.
My mother’s sister holding a lamp like a weapon.
But nothing about that moment felt funny.
We walked downstairs together.
The house was dark.
The front door was still locked.
Nobody could have entered that way.
Then we heard a noise from the kitchen.
Dad moved first.
He opened the doorway.
And froze.
A person stood beside the old counter.
Holding a folder.
Holding our evidence.
Vanessa.
My stomach dropped.
“How did you get here?””
She looked at my father.
“You found it.””
Dad stepped forward.
“You followed us?””
“No.””
She looked exhausted.
“I came because I needed to stop you from making the biggest mistake of your life.””
I laughed.
“Really?””
Everyone looked at me.
“You tried to erase me from a vacation.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I know how that sounds.””
“It sounds exactly like what you did.””
She looked away.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I was wrong.””
The words shocked me.
Not because they fixed anything.
They didn’t.
But because I had never heard Vanessa admit that before.
Dad stared.
“You broke into this house.””
“I still have a key.””
“You were never supposed to have one.””
She swallowed.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“I don’t know who you are anymore.””
Vanessa looked at the folder in her hands.
“You think these papers prove everything.””
“They do.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“They prove I lied.””
The room became silent.
“But they don’t prove the reason.””
I frowned.
“What reason?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, she looked guilty.
“Your mother was investigating me.””
“Yes.””
“She thought I was stealing money.””
“Yes.””
“She was right.””
Nobody expected that.
Even Dad looked surprised.
Vanessa continued.
“But she didn’t know the whole truth.””
I stepped closer.
“What truth?””
She looked at the floor.
“I wasn’t stealing for myself.””
Dad stared.
“Then who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked toward the stairs.
“Did you find the letter?””
My father’s face changed.
“How do you know about the letter?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because I helped hide it.””
The words made no sense.
“You hid it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because your mother asked me to.””
I felt like the entire world tilted.
“What?””
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t know everything.””
Dad looked furious.
“Don’t use my wife’s name to save yourself.””
“I’m not.””
She reached into her pocket.
And pulled out another envelope.
My heart stopped.
It had my mother’s handwriting.
Again.
“Maya,” Vanessa whispered.
“Your mother wrote this after the first letter.””
Dad took a step forward.
“Why would she give it to you?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she knew she was running out of time.””
Nobody spoke.
She handed it to me.
I didn’t take it.
Not yet.
Because I didn’t know what scared me more.
That Vanessa was lying…
Or that she might finally be telling the truth.
Then my father noticed something.
The envelope was sealed.
But my name wasn’t written on it.
It said:
*“For Marcus. Only after Maya knows the truth.””*
Dad looked at me.
“What truth?””
May you like
Vanessa whispered,
“The truth your mother never wanted you to discover until you were ready.””
