Chapter 2: The Lie Hidden in the Fine Print

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That scared me more than if she had screamed.

The woman who always had something to say suddenly had nothing.

My father stood in the middle of the living room holding his phone like it was something dangerous.

“Explain,” Marcus said.

Vanessa looked at Tyler and Brandon.

“Go upstairs.””

Tyler frowned.

“Why?””

“Now.””

For once, he listened.

The boys disappeared toward the staircase, but not before Tyler looked back at me with a confused expression.

The second they were gone, my father lowered his voice.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

He laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You sent a fake custody document.””

“I didn’t send anything fake.””

“You just said you made a mistake.””

She looked away.

My hands felt cold.

I stared at the document on his phone.

My father’s name was there.

His signature.

A fake version of his handwriting.

It was terrifying seeing how real it looked.

“Dad,” I whispered, “what does it mean?””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know yet.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Maya, you’re making this bigger than it is.””

I looked at her.

“You tried to make Dad look like he abandoned me.””

Her jaw tightened.

“I was trying to solve a problem.””

“What problem?”” Marcus asked.

She hesitated.

Then she said the words I would never forget.

“The problem of having to deal with you.””

The room went silent.

My father stared at her.

“You mean my daughter?””

Vanessa sighed.

“Marcus, be realistic. You work constantly. You’re always worried about her. You never see what this family needs.””

“This family?””

She pointed upstairs.

“Tyler and Brandon need stability.””

I almost laughed.

Stability?

I was the one who had spent years trying to keep peace.

I was the one who cooked dinner when Vanessa was tired.

I was the one who walked the dog in the rain.

But somehow I was the problem.

“What were you going to do with me?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My father stepped closer.

“What was your plan?””

She looked at him.

“You were going to Miami. I thought you needed space.””

“Space from my daughter?””

“From the responsibility.””

His face turned pale.

“You wanted me to come back and find her gone?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“I was going to have my sister take her for a while.””

My stomach dropped.

“Your sister?””

Marcus looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because she agreed.””

“Agreed to what?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

My father walked toward her.

“Vanessa.””

She finally whispered,

“She said she could keep Maya until things settled.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

I wasn’t a daughter.

I wasn’t a person.

I was something being moved around.

A problem being transferred.

My father picked up his phone.

“Who is your sister?””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Why?””

“Because I want to know who was prepared to take my child without my permission.””

She reached for his phone.

“Marcus, stop.””

He moved away.

“No.””

The word was quiet.

But powerful.

“I trusted you.””

Vanessa’s face softened.

“I love you.””

He looked at her sadly.

“If you loved me, you wouldn’t have done this.””

I left the room before I started crying again.

I went upstairs and sat on my bed.

The room looked exactly the same as it always had.

My books.

My pictures.

The small bracelet my mom gave me before she died.

Everything was still there.

But suddenly it felt like none of it belonged to me.

A few minutes later, my father knocked.

“Maya?””

I wiped my eyes.

“Come in.””

He sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked down.

“You didn’t do it.””

“But I didn’t see it.””

That hurt because I knew he meant it.

“I should have noticed.””

I stayed quiet.

He picked up my mother’s bracelet from my desk.

“She would have been furious.””

A tiny smile appeared on my face.

“She would have yelled at everyone.””

“She would have.””

For the first time that night, we laughed.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His smile disappeared.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just stared.

“Dad?””

He turned the phone toward me.

It was a number I didn’t recognize.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

“Is this Marcus Carter?””

“Yes.””

“This is the airline fraud department.””

My heart started racing.

The woman continued.

“We need to discuss the cancellation request made under your name.””

My father stood.

“What about it?””

There was a pause.

Then the woman said,

“Mr. Carter… the person who canceled your daughter’s ticket didn’t just request a refund.””

My father gripped the phone tighter.

“What else did they do?””

The woman took a breath.

“They requested that Maya Carter be removed from the passenger list permanently.””

I froze.

My father looked at me.

May you like

Then the woman added one more sentence.

“And there’s something else you need to know about the person who submitted the request.””
