Chapter 7: The Letter My Mother Hid

Vanessa’s hand stopped inches from the envelope.

My father grabbed her arm before she could touch it.

“What are you doing?””

For the first time, she looked afraid of him.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Let go of me,” she whispered.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the warning in it.

I held the envelope against my chest.

My mother’s handwriting was right there.

Sixteen years.

Sixteen years of wondering what her voice sounded like.

Sixteen years of wishing I could ask her questions.

And now, somehow, she had left answers behind.

Answers Vanessa didn’t want me to see.

“Why are you scared of a letter?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Maya, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“She can read it.””

Vanessa glared at her.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“I know exactly what I’m doing. I’m finally keeping a promise.””

Dad looked between them.

“What promise?””

Evelyn looked at the envelope.

“Your wife asked me to protect Maya if anything happened to her.””

My father’s face changed.

“She never told me that.””

“She didn’t trust you with everything.””

The words hit him hard.

I saw the pain on his face.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because somewhere deep down, he knew there were things he didn’t know.

I walked into the living room and sat on the couch.

My hands shook as I opened the envelope.

The paper inside was old.

Carefully folded.

I could almost imagine my mother sitting somewhere, writing every word.

My dear Maya,

If you are reading this, it means I couldn’t tell you these things myself.

I had to stop.

I couldn’t continue.

My eyes blurred.

Dad sat beside me.

Evelyn stood behind the couch.

Even Vanessa stayed silent.

I kept reading.

I need you to know something first.

Your father loves you more than anything in this world.

A tear fell onto the paper.

But love doesn’t mean people always make the right choices.

I looked at Dad.

He lowered his head.

I continued.

Before I got sick, I discovered something about someone close to our family. I didn’t know who I could trust. I was afraid that if I spoke too soon, I would lose the chance to protect you.

My heart started pounding.

Someone close to our family.

I turned the page.

The next sentence made my blood run cold.

I believe someone has been trying to convince Marcus that I was getting worse. I believe someone wanted him to doubt me.

Dad suddenly stood.

“What?””

I looked up.

“Dad…”

He stared at the letter.

“I never knew.””

Evelyn whispered,

“She suspected.””

I kept reading.

Maya, if anything happens to me, don’t let anyone tell you that I stopped fighting. Don’t let anyone make you believe I gave up.

I covered my mouth.

My mother had known.

She knew something was wrong.

And nobody told me.

The next part was shorter.

I wrote down everything I found. The names. The dates. The conversations.

The evidence.

Evidence.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

I turned the page.

But the last page was missing.

I flipped the letter over.

Nothing.

“That’s it?””

Evelyn’s face fell.

“What?””

“There’s supposed to be another page.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

Her expression changed.

Everyone noticed.

“Vanessa,” he said.

She looked away.

“Where is it?””

“I don’t know.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You do.””

“No, I don’t.””

“You took it.””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“That’s insane.””

My father walked toward her.

“Did you?””

She looked at him.

“Marcus, think about what you’re saying.””

“I’m asking a question.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered,

“I found the letter years ago.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

She looked at me.

“After we moved into this house.””

Dad stared.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t understand what it was.””

“You read it.””

“I was curious.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You stole from a child.””

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“I was trying to protect my marriage.””

I stood.

“My mother’s final words were a threat to your marriage?””

She looked at me.

“Maya—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You took something from me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father noticed something.

The envelope.

Inside.

A small corner of paper was folded behind the main letter.

He pulled it out.

Everyone leaned closer.

It wasn’t another page.

It was a photograph.

An old photograph of my mother.

And on the back was written one sentence.

*“If Vanessa finds this, she will know I was right.””*

The room went completely silent.

Dad slowly turned the photograph over.

And his face changed.

May you like

Because in the picture, standing beside my mother…

Was Vanessa.
