Chapter 12: The Choice My Mother Made

My father took the envelope.

But he didn’t open it.

He just stared at it.

Like it was something alive.

Something dangerous.

“Why now?”” he asked Vanessa.

She looked exhausted.

“Because you found the evidence.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

She looked at me.

“Because Maya is old enough now.””

I hated hearing that.

Old enough.

Everyone kept saying that.

Like my life was a locked box and adults had the key.

“What is inside?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You owe me the truth.””

She nodded.

“I do.””

For the first time, I believed she meant it.

Not because she was suddenly a good person.

She wasn’t.

She had hurt me.

She had lied.

But something had changed.

She was no longer pretending she had nothing to hide.

Dad opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

I watched every emotion cross his face.

Confusion.

Pain.

Shock.

Finally, he handed it to me.

“Maya…”

I took it.

The first line was from my mother.

Marcus,

If Maya is reading this, it means she is old enough to understand why I made the hardest decision of my life.

I continued.

I need you both to know that Vanessa was not the only person I was afraid of.

My eyes moved faster.

There was another person.

Someone I trusted completely.

Someone who had access to our home.

Someone who knew every detail of our lives.

I looked at Dad.

He was pale.

The letter continued.

I discovered that person was using my illness as a weapon against me. They wanted Marcus to believe I was confused. They wanted everyone to believe I was unstable.

My hands shook.

But I also discovered something else.

Vanessa knew.

I stopped.

Dad looked at me.

“She knew?””

I kept reading.

She helped me collect evidence. She helped me create a backup plan. But I don’t know if she will stay brave when things become difficult.

I looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her eyes.

The woman who had destroyed my vacation.

The woman who had stolen my mother’s letter.

The woman who had spent years making me feel unwanted.

Had also once helped my mother.

I didn’t know what to feel.

The letter continued.

Maya, there is one thing you must understand.

The person who hurt me was not Vanessa.

The person who hurt me was someone closer.

Someone Marcus trusted more than anyone.

The room went silent.

Dad whispered,

“No.””

Then the final sentence appeared.

I found proof.

But before I could expose them, they found out.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Dad looked at the letter.

His hands started shaking.

“Maya…”

“What?””

He looked toward Evelyn.

Then toward Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“It says your mother left the evidence with someone she trusted.””

“Who?””

He swallowed.

“The person she believed would protect you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Tired.

Familiar.

My father’s face changed instantly.

Because he knew him.

Vanessa went pale.

And Evelyn whispered,

“That’s impossible.””

The man looked at me.

Then at the letter in my hands.

And said,

“Maya…”

His voice cracked.

“I’m sorry.””

My father stepped forward.

“Why are you here?””

The man looked down.

“Because she finally found out.””

I stared.

“Found out what?””

The man looked at Vanessa.

Then my father.

May you like

Then me.

“The truth about who really caused your mother’s death.””
