Chapter 13: The Man Who Carried the Secret

The room went silent.

I had spent the last few days discovering that every person I trusted had hidden something from me.

My stepmother.

My father.

My aunt.

And now this man standing in the doorway.

A man whose face I recognized from old family photos.

A man who had been there when I was little.

“Daniel?”” my father whispered.

The man nodded.

“I know you don’t want to see me.””

My father stepped forward.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was.””

“Then why are you here?””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Because Maya deserves the truth.””

I hated that sentence.

Everyone kept saying it.

But every time someone said it, another piece of my world broke apart.

I held the letter tighter.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“I was your mother’s attorney.””

My heart stopped.

“My mother had an attorney?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

He looked at my father.

“That was the plan.””

My father frowned.

“What plan?””

Daniel took a breath.

“The plan to protect Maya if something happened.””

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“He’s telling the truth.””

Everyone turned.

My father looked at her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I knew about Daniel.””

The anger returned to my father’s face.

“Of course you did.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“I didn’t tell you because your wife asked me not to.””

“That excuse is getting old.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

Daniel stepped inside.

He placed a folder on the table.

“This is everything your mother collected.””

Dad stared at it.

“Why now?””

“Because the person who caused all of this knows we found it.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“That’s the part your mother was trying to prove.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were financial records.

Emails.

Photographs.

I recognized one person immediately.

Someone I had seen at every family gathering.

Someone who hugged me when I was little.

Someone my father trusted.

My father picked up the documents.

His face slowly changed.

“No.””

Daniel said nothing.

Dad looked again.

“No. This can’t be true.””

I stepped closer.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

And I had never seen him look so broken.

“It was him.””

“Who?””

My father couldn’t say the name.

Daniel did.

“Your father’s closest friend.””

I stared.

“Uncle Richard?””

Nobody spoke.

The name felt impossible.

Richard had been part of my childhood.

He brought me birthday gifts.

He taught me how to ride a bike.

He attended my mother’s funeral.

He cried beside my father.

“You’re saying he did this?”” I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

“Richard had access to the charity accounts. He knew Vanessa was being blamed. He used her mistakes to hide his own.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I was angry at your mother.””

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“I hated that she discovered what I did. I thought she was going to destroy my life.””

“You stole money,” Dad said.

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

“But Richard convinced me he could fix it.””

Daniel pointed at the papers.

“He manipulated both of you.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“You helped him?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t know what he was really doing.””

“But you lied.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

I looked at her.

“All these years…”

She nodded.

“I know.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“Richard was the one who convinced Marcus that your mother was unstable. He was the one spreading rumors.””

Dad covered his face.

“I believed him.””

Nobody answered.

Because there was nothing to say.

Then Daniel pulled out one final document.

“This is what your mother was trying to get before she died.””

My father looked up.

“What is it?””

“A confession.””

My heart raced.

“From who?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Richard.””

“How?””

“He recorded it.””

Dad grabbed the paper.

“Where is the recording?””

Daniel hesitated.

“That’s the problem.””

“What problem?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother hid the original recording somewhere only you could find.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because she knew if she gave it to anyone else, they could be controlled.””

A chill moved through me.

My mother had planned everything.

Even after she was gone.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed immediately.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

“What happened?””

He ended the call slowly.

Then he looked at us.

“Richard knows we’re here.””

My father stood.

“How?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because someone just broke into your old house.””

My blood ran cold.

“The evidence…”

May you like

Daniel looked at the folder.

“It’s gone.””
