Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Kept

The name Evelyn stayed in my head all day.

Like a song I couldn’t turn off.

Evelyn.

My mother’s sister.

A person I had never heard about.

A person my father acted like was a ghost.

And somehow Vanessa knew her.

By afternoon, the house felt completely different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But everything felt like it was hiding something.

Dad sat across from me at the dining table.

Vanessa was gone.

She said she needed “time.””

I knew what that meant.

She needed time to prepare.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Dad looked down.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

The silence between us hurt.

I had spent my whole life believing my father was the one person who would never hide anything from me.

Now I wasn’t sure.

“What happened after Mom died?””

Dad rubbed his hands together.

“Your mother’s sister, Evelyn, blamed me.””

“For what?””

“For your mother’s death.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She thought I should have noticed how sick she was sooner.””

I looked down.

“That’s not fair.””

“I know.””

His voice became quieter.

“But grief makes people say things they don’t mean.””

“Then why did she disappear?””

Dad looked toward the window.

“Because she tried to take you.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She believed you would be better with her.””

I felt dizzy.

“My aunt tried to take me?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was protecting you.””

I stood.

“From what? The truth?””

“Maya—”

“No.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Everyone keeps making decisions for me.””

Dad looked hurt.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You all say that.””

I walked away.

For years, adults had whispered around me.

They decided what I could handle.

What I should know.

What was too painful.

But nobody ever asked what I wanted.

That evening, Dad found me sitting outside on the porch.

He sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at the street.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

After a moment, he handed me his phone.

“I found something.””

I looked at the screen.

It was an email.

From Evelyn.

Sent six months earlier.

The subject line was simple.

*About Maya.*

I opened it.

The message was short.

Marcus,

You can’t hide what happened forever. Maya deserves to know the truth about her mother’s final days.

My hands shook.

“What does this mean?””

Dad looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“You do.””

He stayed silent.

That was enough.

“Dad.””

He took a deep breath.

“Your mother left something behind.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

I stared at him.

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I don’t have it.””

“Who does?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Vanessa.””

Dad nodded.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

I stood.

“So Vanessa has a letter from Mom?””

“Yes.””

“And she never told me?””

“No.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

This was bigger than a vacation.

Bigger than a ticket.

Vanessa hadn’t just tried to leave me behind.

She had been holding onto something connected to my mother.

Something important.

Then Dad’s phone rang.

He answered immediately.

“Hello?””

His face changed.

“What?””

I watched him listen.

Then his eyes moved toward the front door.

“No, that’s impossible.””

He stood.

“Maya, stay here.””

I followed him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t respond.

He just opened the front door.

And standing outside was Vanessa.

But she wasn’t alone.

Beside her was an older woman with gray hair.

A woman I had never met.

A woman who looked exactly like my mother.

Dad whispered her name.

“Evelyn.””

The woman stared at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

May you like

Then she said,

“Maya… I’m sorry it took sixteen years for you to find out.””
