Chapter 9: The Test They Never Wanted Me to See
Megan’s silence answered before her words did.
“What DNA test?”” I repeated.
She looked at Mark.
Not me.
Him.
That was all I needed to see.
“You two planned this together.””
Mark shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why are you looking at him?””
“Chloe—”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I’m done believing half-truths.””
Megan’s expression hardened.
“You’re making this emotional.””
I almost smiled.
That sentence.
That exact sentence.
Everyone in this family used it.
Whenever I got close to something.
Whenever I asked the wrong question.
“Where is the test?””
Nobody answered.
I walked toward the folder again.
Mark blocked me.
“Please.””
I stared at him.
“Move.””
“Chloe.””
“Move.””
Something in my voice made him step aside.
Inside the folder were more documents.
Legal forms.
Medical records.
Emails.
Then I saw it.
A laboratory envelope.
My name.
Lily’s name.
And Megan’s name.
I opened it.
The report was dated two months earlier.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
Then I stopped.
Because I didn’t understand.
I looked up.
“What does this mean?””
Mark looked terrified.
Megan looked angry.
I held up the paper.
“The results say there is no biological relationship between Megan and Lily.””
Silence.
Complete silence.
Megan’s face changed.
“What?””
I stared at her.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew this whole time.””
She shook her head.
“That’s impossible.””
Mark looked at the report.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked between them.
“You filed custody papers based on a lie.””
Megan stepped forward.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I understand perfectly.””
I looked at Mark.
“You let me believe I was fighting against a woman who had some claim over my daughter.””
He didn’t answer.
“Why?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I was trying to protect everyone.””
“Everyone except me.””
He looked away.
That was enough.
I grabbed the documents.
“I’m taking these.””
Megan moved.
“You can’t.””
I looked at her.
“Watch me.””
I walked toward the door.
Then Mark said:
“There’s more.””
I stopped.
I didn’t turn around.
“What?””
His voice was quiet.
“Lily’s birth records were changed.””
I slowly faced him.
“What?””
“The original paperwork.””
My heart started pounding.
“What about it?””
Mark swallowed.
“It wasn’t supposed to list you as the only parent.””
The room tilted.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at Megan.
Then back at me.
“It means someone altered the records after Lily was born.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time, the unknown number sent a screenshot.
A hospital employee’s name.
A date.
And a note.
*I know who changed the records.*
I looked at Mark.
“Who was this?””
His face went pale.
“I don’t know.””
But he was lying.
I knew him.
I knew every expression.
Every hesitation.
Every nervous movement.
And right now, he was terrified of one name.
“Megan?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mark.””
Still nothing.
I stepped closer.
“Who changed Lily’s records?””
Finally, Mark whispered:
“My mother.””
I froze.
“Linda?””
He nodded.
“The night Lily was born…”
His voice broke.
“My mother made a decision that changed all our lives.””
I looked at the folder.
The DNA test.
The guardianship papers.
The hidden agreements.
And suddenly I understood.
Thanksgiving wasn’t the beginning.
It was the explosion.
The fire had been burning for years.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
This time, I answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
Shaking.
Afraid.
“Chloe?””
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m the nurse who helped deliver Lily.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What do you want?””
Her voice dropped.
“I need to tell you what really happened that night.””
I held my breath.
Then she said:
“Your daughter was taken from your room for eleven minutes.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“Why?””
May you like
The nurse whispered:
“Because your mother-in-law was trying to make sure you never knew who Lily’s real father was.””
