Chapter 14: The Last Lie
I felt the room change.
One sentence.
That was all it took.
*That Lily was the only secret.*
I looked at Megan.
“What does that mean?””
Mark immediately stepped forward.
“Megan, stop.””
She ignored him.
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
“You want the truth?””
I laughed softly.
“After ten years of lies, I think I deserve it.””
Megan looked at Linda.
“You should have told her.””
Linda looked away.
“I was trying to protect her.””
Megan smiled bitterly.
“Everyone’s favorite excuse.””
I looked between them.
“What else is there?””
Nobody answered.
Then Megan said:
“Daniel wasn’t just my husband.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“He was Mark’s best friend.””
I looked at Mark.
He closed his eyes.
“You knew Daniel?””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
“How long?””
“Before you met me.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at Mark.
“You never told me.””
“I didn’t think it mattered.””
“Of course you didn’t.””
Megan continued.
“Daniel trusted Mark.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with pain.
“Because Mark was the only person who knew how sick he was.””
I stared.
“And?””
“And when Daniel found out he wasn’t going to survive, he asked Mark for one thing.””
“What?””
Megan looked at me.
“To make sure his child was loved.””
I felt a strange sadness.
Because beneath all the lies was a dying man who just wanted his child safe.
Then Megan ruined it.
“But Mark changed.””
I looked at him.
“What does she mean?””
Mark’s face went pale.
“Chloe…”
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“What did you do?””
He didn’t answer.
Megan laughed quietly.
“That’s the part he never told you.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
Mark whispered:
“I fell in love with you.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Before Lily was born.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
“Everything.””
He looked broken.
“When Daniel died, Megan wanted Lily to know her biological family.””
“And you?””
He looked down.
“I wanted us to be a family.””
I shook my head.
“So you hid the truth.””
“Yes.””
“You stole a choice from me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
I looked at Megan.
“And you?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I blamed you.””
“For what?””
“For everything.””
The answer was immediate.
“I saw you holding Lily, and I saw the life I lost.””
I stared at her.
“So you tried to take her.””
“I thought I was supposed to have her.””
“No.””
My voice became firm.
“You thought you deserved her.””
Megan looked away.
For once, she didn’t argue.
Then Linda said quietly:
“There’s still one thing you don’t know.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked at Mark.
He looked terrified.
“Your mother found out.””
I froze.
“What?””
Linda nodded.
“She discovered the truth after Lily was born.””
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Linda’s eyes filled.
“Because Mark begged her not to.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
Mark’s face collapsed.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would leave.””
I laughed.
A painful laugh.
“So you destroyed my trust to keep me?””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You had ten years.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
I reached for my phone.
I didn’t know what I expected.
Maybe another message.
Maybe another answer.
Instead, there was a notification.
A court update.
The guardianship hearing had been moved.
Tomorrow morning.
I stared at the screen.
Megan saw it.
“So now you understand.””
I looked at her.
“Understand what?””
“That this isn’t over.””
I slipped the phone into my pocket.
“No.””
I looked at everyone in that room.
“This is finally ending.””
Mark stepped forward.
“Chloe.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Those words.
The words I had waited years to hear.
They meant nothing now.
Because apologies couldn’t erase decisions.
They couldn’t erase lies.
They couldn’t erase the moment he chose silence while Lily cried.
I walked toward the door.
Then Linda called out.
“Chloe.””
I stopped.
She whispered:
“There is one person who can prove everything.””
I turned.
“Who?””
Linda looked toward Mark.
“The man who helped change the records.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Mark looked away.
And then Linda said the name.
May you like
A name I never expected.
“Your father.””
