Chapter 13: The Woman Who Changed Everything

I read the message until the words blurred.

*Ask Linda why she changed the records after Daniel’s family arrived.*

For years, I had thought my biggest mistake was trusting Mark.

I was wrong.

My biggest mistake was believing this was only about Mark.

It was bigger.

Older.

A secret built by everyone around me.

I folded my mother’s letter carefully and placed it back inside the envelope.

Then I looked at Mark.

“Call your mother.””

His face changed immediately.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“No?””

“She won’t tell you anything.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I grabbed my coat.

“Where are you going?”” he asked.

“To get the truth.””

Megan stood.

“Chloe, you don’t understand what you’re walking into.””

I turned toward her.

“You’re right.””

My voice was calm.

“For ten years, I didn’t understand anything.””

I looked at her.

“Because every person in this room decided I wasn’t important enough to know.””

Nobody spoke.

I left.

The drive to Linda’s house felt longer than it was.

Every street reminded me of something.

A Christmas dinner.

A birthday party.

A Sunday afternoon when Lily played in the backyard while Linda watched from the porch.

How many times had she looked at my daughter knowing something I didn’t?

When I arrived, her car was in the driveway.

Good.

I didn’t want another excuse.

I knocked.

The door opened almost immediately.

Linda froze when she saw me.

“Chloe.””

Her voice was careful.

Too careful.

“I need to talk.””

She glanced behind me.

“Where’s Mark?””

“Not with me.””

That seemed to worry her.

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The house smelled exactly the same.

Cinnamon.

Coffee.

Old memories.

I hated that.

Because it made everything more confusing.

I stood in the living room.

“You changed Lily’s birth records.””

Linda went completely still.

No denial.

No confusion.

Just silence.

I felt my stomach drop.

“You know what I’m talking about.””

She sat down slowly.

“I was hoping this day would never come.””

“Why?””

She looked up.

“Because I knew you would hate me.””

I laughed.

“You’re right.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You were protecting yourselves.””

Linda looked away.

“When Lily was born, everything was falling apart.””

“For who?””

“For everyone.””

I waited.

She sighed.

“Daniel was dying.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

Her eyes widened.

“You know?””

“I know everything you thought you buried.””

That frightened her.

Good.

“Daniel wanted his child to have a future,” Linda whispered.

“He wanted Lily.””

“Yes.””

“But I was her mother.””

Linda looked at me.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I saw what would happen.””

“What?””

“Megan would lose everything.””

I stared.

“So you decided I should?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

The word echoed.

Linda covered her face.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

“I thought you and Mark could raise her together.””

I froze.

“Together?””

Linda looked down.

“Mark loved you.””

I almost smiled.

“Did he?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he hide this?””

She had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

I leaned forward.

“What did you change?””

Linda’s hands trembled.

“I changed the hospital paperwork.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel’s family was coming.””

“What does that mean?””

“They wanted custody.””

I froze.

“Custody?””

Linda nodded.

“Daniel’s parents believed Lily belonged with them.””

I stared.

“So you erased Daniel.””

“No.””

“You changed the records.””

“I protected you.””

I felt anger rising.

“You keep saying that.””

Linda started crying.

“Chloe, listen to me. Daniel’s family wasn’t the only threat.””

“What do you mean?””

She looked terrified.

“Megan.””

I frowned.

“What about her?””

Linda whispered:

“Megan never accepted that Lily loved you more.””

The room became silent.

“She wanted Lily.””

“She was grieving.””

“No.””

Linda shook her head.

“She was obsessed.””

I felt cold.

“What are you saying?””

Before Linda could answer, her front door opened.

We both turned.

Mark stood there.

And behind him was Megan.

I stared.

“How did you know I was here?””

Nobody answered.

Then Megan smiled.

Not the angry smile from Thanksgiving.

Something worse.

A calm smile.

“I think it’s time we stop pretending.””

My body went still.

“Pretending what?””

Megan looked at Linda.

Then at Mark.

May you like

Then at me.

“That Lily was the only secret.””
