Chapter 2: The Recording My Husband Buried

I sat in my parked car for almost a full minute after Zoe hung up.

The heater was running.

The windshield was fogging.

Lily was quietly coloring in the backseat with the crayons she always carried in her backpack.

Everything looked normal.

That was the terrifying part.

A normal mother.

A normal child.

A normal night.

Except my entire marriage felt like it was collapsing around me.

Twenty minutes later, headlights appeared behind my car.

Zoe pulled in and rushed over.

The second she opened my door, she saw Lily’s face.

Her expression changed.

“Oh my God.””

She covered her mouth.

I watched my older sister try not to cry.

“She’s okay,” I whispered.

Zoe looked at me.

“She’s five, Chloe.””

“I know.””

“No. I mean she’s five.””

Her voice cracked.

“She’s not old enough to understand why an adult hurt her. She’s only old enough to wonder if she deserved it.””

Those words destroyed me.

Because Lily had already asked the question I was afraid she would ask.

We moved into Zoe’s apartment because I couldn’t bring myself to go back to the house I shared with Mark.

After Lily fell asleep on Zoe’s couch, my sister sat across from me.

She held her phone in her hand.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

I stared at the screen.

“What is this?””

“A conversation.””

“With who?””

She hesitated.

“Mark.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

I looked at her.

“You had a recording of my husband for three months?””

Zoe looked away.

“He made me promise not to show you.””

“And you listened?””

“I tried to believe there was an explanation.””

I laughed bitterly.

“An explanation for what?””

Zoe pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then I heard Mark’s voice.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

The tired voice.

The annoyed voice.

The voice he used when he thought someone was inconveniencing him.

Then Megan spoke.

“Chloe is getting suspicious.””

My entire body went still.

Zoe watched my face.

I kept listening.

“She’s always been sensitive,” Mark said.

Sensitive.

That word.

I had heard it for years.

Whenever I cried.

Whenever something hurt me.

Whenever I asked him to stand up for me.

“She’s your wife,” Megan said in the recording.

“She’s my wife, not my priority.””

My breath caught.

Zoe reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

No.

I needed to hear everything.

Megan laughed.

“You said you’d handle it.””

“I will.””

“When?””

“When the timing is right.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the phone.

“What was that?””

Zoe swallowed.

“That’s why I saved it.””

I looked at her.

“Saved it from what?””

She looked toward Lily sleeping in the other room.

“From the day I realized Mark wasn’t just ignoring problems.””

A chill moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Zoe sat beside me.

“Chloe, have you ever wondered why Mark always changed when Megan was around?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I had.

So many times.

The way he laughed at jokes he didn’t find funny.

The way he defended her before hearing what happened.

The way he acted like keeping Megan happy was his responsibility.

But I had always told myself it was family loyalty.

I had been wrong.

“I found another recording,” Zoe said.

My eyes widened.

“Another?””

She nodded.

“This one was from last year.””

My stomach turned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

“Protecting me from my own husband?””

Zoe looked down.

“I was afraid you’d hear it and still find a way to forgive him.””

That hurt because it was true.

I had forgiven Mark before.

Too many times.

The forgotten anniversaries.

The canceled plans.

The moments when he told me I was overreacting.

I always found a reason.

Because admitting my husband didn’t choose me was harder than pretending he did.

Zoe unlocked her phone again.

“Listen.””

The second recording started.

This time, Mark sounded angry.

“You shouldn’t have done that.””

Megan replied.

“She’ll never leave.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

“Because Chloe thinks she has a perfect family.””

The recording continued.

Mark sighed.

“She loves Lily.””

Megan laughed.

“She loves you too. That’s the problem.””

A long silence followed.

Then Mark said something that made my blood turn cold.

“After the holidays, I’ll figure it out.””

The recording ended.

I couldn’t move.

“What was he going to figure out?””

Zoe didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because suddenly, every strange moment from the last year came rushing back.

The secret phone calls.

The sudden business trips.

The way he locked his phone whenever I entered the room.

I looked at Lily sleeping peacefully.

Then I looked at my sister.

“Zoe…”

“Yes?””

“What was Mark planning?””

Before she could answer, my phone lit up.

One new message.

From Mark.

I stared at the screen.

The text was only six words.

May you like

But those six words changed everything.

*We need to talk about Lily.*
