Chapter 11: The Man Behind the Missing Name

Nobody spoke.

Not Mark.

Not Megan.

Not me.

The only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the kitchen doorway.

A sound I had heard thousands of times.

But never like this.

“Who was there?”” I asked again.

Mark looked away.

That was when I knew.

He wasn’t protecting me.

He wasn’t protecting Lily.

He was protecting a secret.

“Mark.””

His jaw tightened.

“Chloe, this isn’t simple.””

I almost smiled.

“Nothing in this family is ever simple, is it?””

Megan stepped forward.

“You need to stop digging.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

“Because you won’t like what you find.””

“That’s not your decision.””

She looked at me with something close to pity.

“You think knowing everything will make you feel better.””

“No.””

I looked at Lily’s sleeping room.

“I think my daughter deserves the truth.””

The word daughter made Megan flinch.

Good.

Because for years, everyone had talked about Lily like she was an object.

A legal problem.

A family possession.

Nobody had asked what she needed.

Except me.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

The unknown number.

*Look at the name under the original birth certificate.*

Attached was a photo.

A birth certificate.

Not the one I had.

The original.

I opened it.

My eyes moved across the page.

Mother:

Chloe Bennett.

Father:

A name I had never seen.

My heart stopped.

*Daniel Carter.*

I looked up.

“Megan.””

Her face went white.

Mark whispered:

“Oh no.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

“You knew this man existed.””

Mark sat down.

“I knew his name.””

“Who was he?””

Nobody answered.

I walked closer.

“Who was Daniel Carter?””

Megan’s eyes filled with tears.

“My husband.””

The room went silent.

I felt dizzy.

“Your husband?””

She nodded.

“Before he died.””

I looked at Mark.

“So Lily’s father was Megan’s husband?””

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

Not because of biology.

Because of the betrayal.

The years of lies.

The fake explanations.

The way everyone had built a wall around me.

“Why?””

My voice cracked.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Megan looked down.

“Because Daniel was dying.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He had cancer.””

I didn’t know what to say.

“He wanted a child.””

“And?””

“And we couldn’t.””

She looked at Mark.

“Your husband offered to help.””

I turned.

“Mark?””

He looked ashamed.

“I was trying to help my sister.””

“You helped her hide my daughter’s identity.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I pointed at the original certificate.

“Yes.””

Mark stood.

“Chloe, listen.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to explain this away.””

Megan wiped her eyes.

“Daniel never got to meet Lily.””

The anger inside me froze.

“What?””

“He died two months before she was born.””

I stared at her.

“And you still let me believe she was just my child.””

Megan’s voice broke.

“She is your child.””

“Then why did you try to take her?””

She had no answer.

Because there was no answer that could justify it.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was a voicemail.

From Rachel.

I pressed play.

Her voice came through quietly.

“Chloe, I remembered something.””

Everyone became still.

“The night Lily was born, Daniel Carter’s family came to the hospital.””

My eyes widened.

“His family?””

“Yes.””

Rachel sounded afraid.

“They were asking questions.””

“What questions?””

A pause.

Then:

“They wanted to know why the baby’s records had been changed.””

My heart pounded.

“What are you saying?””

The voicemail ended.

Then a final message appeared.

*Your husband wasn’t the only person who knew the truth.*

I looked at Mark.

“Who else knew?””

He didn’t answer.

Megan did.

May you like

And her answer changed everything.

“Your mother.””
