Chapter 3: The Family I Thought I Knew
I didn’t answer Mark’s message.
Not immediately.
I just stared at it until the screen went dark.
Then it lit up again.
Another message.
*Please don’t make this worse.*
My hands started shaking.
Not because I was afraid of him.
Because I finally understood something.
Mark wasn’t worried about Lily.
He was worried about control.
“He knows,” Zoe said quietly.
I looked up.
“What?””
“He knows I showed you.””
“How?””
Zoe looked uncomfortable.
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.
“I went to the house before coming here.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“To get Lily’s medicine and some clothes.””
She placed the envelope on the table.
“I found this in your bedroom.””
I stared at it.
My name was written on the front.
Chloe.
Nothing else.
I slowly opened it.
Inside was a printed document.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was looking at.
Then I saw the words at the top.
Custody Agreement.
My fingers went numb.
“No.””
Zoe leaned closer.
“Chloe…”
“No.””
I flipped through the pages.
It wasn’t signed.
But it was real.
A draft.
A plan.
A plan for taking Lily away from me.
My vision blurred.
“Why would he have this?””
Zoe’s face hardened.
“Because tonight wasn’t about dinner.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“He didn’t want you to fight Megan.””
“He wanted me to stay quiet.””
“Yes.””
The room felt colder.
I remembered every time Mark had told me to let things go.
Every time he said, “That’s just Megan.””
Every time he made me feel like peace was more important than truth.
He wasn’t avoiding conflict.
He was training me to accept it.
My phone rang.
Mark.
I looked at the screen.
Zoe shook her head.
“Don’t answer if you’re not ready.””
I almost let it go to voicemail.
But Lily suddenly moved on the couch.
“Mommy?””
I walked over immediately.
“I’m here, baby.””
She opened her eyes halfway.
“Are we going home?””
The question broke me.
I sat beside her.
“Not tonight.””
“Is Daddy mad?””
I looked away.
“No.””
But I wasn’t sure anymore.
After Lily fell back asleep, I answered Mark’s call.
His voice came through immediately.
“Chloe.””
No apology.
No concern.
Just my name.
“What?””
“You need to calm down.””
I laughed softly.
“Calm down?””
“Yes.””
“My daughter was hit.””
“I know.””
“And you did nothing.””
“I was trying to prevent a bigger situation.””
I closed my eyes.
“A bigger situation than your sister hitting a child?””
“Stop twisting my words.””
There it was.
The phrase he always used.
Twisting.
Overreacting.
Being emotional.
“Mark, why do you have custody papers?””
Silence.
A long silence.
My heart started pounding.
“You went through my things?””
“Answer me.””
“Chloe…”
“Why?””
His voice became colder.
“Because I knew you would do this.””
“Do what?””
“Turn everyone against me.””
I stared at the phone.
“You think this is about you?””
“No. I think you’re angry.””
“I’m a mother whose child was hurt.””
“You hurt Megan too.””
The room went silent.
Even Zoe looked shocked.
“You’re comparing my reaction to what she did?””
“You attacked my sister.””
“She attacked our daughter.””
Mark exhaled.
“See? This is exactly why we need to talk.””
“Talk about what?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Maybe Lily would be better somewhere more stable.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What did you say?””
“I’m not threatening you.””
“You’re talking about taking my daughter.””
“I’m talking about what’s best for her.””
I looked at Lily.
My little girl.
The child who still slept with a stuffed rabbit under her arm.
The child who cried because someone raised their voice.
And my husband was suggesting she belonged away from me.
“You should have apologized tonight,” Mark said.
I felt something inside me go completely quiet.
Not angry.
Not broken.
Just clear.
“Why?””
“What?””
“Why did you really need me to apologize?””
He didn’t answer.
And that silence told me more than words could.
Because for the first time in our marriage, I wasn’t begging him to understand me.
I was listening.
I was watching.
I was remembering.
Then Mark whispered:
“Because Megan was going to tell you the truth.””
My blood froze.
“What truth?””
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then Zoe’s phone suddenly buzzed.
She looked at the notification.
Her face drained of color.
“What?””
She slowly turned the phone toward me.
It was a message from an unknown number.
Attached was a photo.
A photo of Mark.
Standing outside a courthouse.
With Megan beside him.
May you like
And underneath the picture were four words:
*You need to see this.*
