Chapter 8: The Truth They Buried

The room stopped moving.

For a second, I couldn’t understand the words.

They were English.

I knew every word.

But my brain refused to connect them.

“Say that again.””

Mark looked away.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

I laughed.

A small, broken laugh.

“How else do you mean it?””

Megan crossed her arms.

“She deserves the truth.””

I turned toward her.

“You don’t get to talk about truth.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

I looked at Mark.

“Explain.””

He sat down slowly.

Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.

“Before Lily was born…”

I waited.

“We had complications.””

I frowned.

“What complications?””

“You remember.””

“No.””

His eyes met mine.

“You were in labor for almost twenty hours.””

I remembered.

The pain.

The panic.

The doctors rushing around.

But I remembered Mark holding my hand.

“I was there,” I said.

“Yes.””

“Then what are you talking about?””

He swallowed.

“The doctors were worried.””

“About me?””

He didn’t answer.

“About Lily?””

Still nothing.

My heart started racing.

“Mark.””

His voice dropped.

“There was a possibility we wouldn’t be able to have a healthy baby.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

He looked down.

“It doesn’t.””

Megan stepped forward.

“It was my baby.””

The room went silent.

I turned toward her.

“What?””

Her face was calm.

Too calm.

“The pregnancy.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

Mark stood.

“Megan—”

“No, she needs to know.””

I looked at Mark.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

He didn’t.

That was the answer.

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“No.””

My voice barely came out.

“No.””

Mark reached toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.””

“Chloe…”

“Don’t.””

Megan’s voice continued.

“My husband and I had been trying for years.””

I stared at her.

“Your husband?””

She nodded.

“Before he died.””

My mind raced.

“What does this have to do with Lily?””

Mark looked destroyed.

And that hurt.

Because even now, some part of me wanted him to say this wasn’t real.

“Megan couldn’t carry a pregnancy,” he said.

I looked at him.

“And?””

“And we wanted to help.””

The words landed slowly.

“You wanted to help.””

He nodded.

“She was my sister.””

I laughed.

A horrible sound.

“So you decided what?””

Megan answered.

“Surrogacy.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“No, because I carried Lily.””

“Yes.””

Megan looked at me.

“You did.””

“Then she’s my daughter.””

“She is.””

That surprised me.

But then Megan continued:

“Legally, biologically, emotionally… there are things you don’t know.””

My head was spinning.

I looked at Mark.

“What did you sign?””

He said nothing.

“What did you sign?””

Finally, he whispered:

“A private agreement.””

I felt sick.

“You signed something about our child.””

“We thought it was best.””

“Who is we?””

He looked at Megan.

And that look broke something inside me.

Because I understood.

For years, there had been a conversation I wasn’t part of.

A decision I didn’t make.

A family plan built around me.

But without me.

“You let me believe she was mine.””

Mark looked shocked.

“She is yours.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say that now.””

Megan moved closer.

“Chloe, nobody is trying to erase you.””

I stared at her.

“You filed guardianship papers.””

Her expression tightened.

“Because you’re unstable.””

There it was.

The real reason.

Not concern.

Not love.

Control.

“You’re using this.””

Megan said nothing.

I looked at Mark.

“You knew.””

He nodded slightly.

“For years?””

“Yes.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“Every birthday.””

“Yes.””

“Every Christmas.””

“Yes.””

“Every night I held her while she was sick.””

His face changed.

“Chloe…”

“You watched me love her.””

He looked down.

“And you waited.””

The room was silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from the unknown number.

*Ask Megan why she needed your DNA test before filing custody papers.*

My breath caught.

Because suddenly I realized something.

The secret wasn’t just about the past.

They were still doing something.

Right now.

I looked at Megan.

“What DNA test?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

May you like

And I knew.

I had just found the one question she didn’t want me to ask.
