Chapter 10: The Eleven Minutes That Disappeared
I couldn’t speak.
The nurse’s words stayed in my mind, repeating over and over.
*Your daughter was taken from your room for eleven minutes.*
Eleven minutes.
A lifetime for a newborn.
A lifetime for a mother who had just survived labor and trusted everyone around her.
“Who are you?”” I finally asked.
The woman on the phone took a shaky breath.
“My name is Rachel. I was one of the nurses working the maternity floor the night Lily was born.””
I looked at Mark.
He had gone completely pale.
“You know her,” I said.
His eyes widened.
“No.””
But the answer came too quickly.
I stepped away from him.
“You know exactly who she is.””
Megan looked nervous now.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Nervous.
Rachel continued.
“I’ve wanted to contact you for years.””
“Why didn’t you?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
There was a long pause.
“Your mother-in-law.””
I closed my eyes.
Linda.
The woman who had sat at that Thanksgiving table and defended the person who hurt my child.
The woman who had looked at Lily and said nothing.
“What did she do?””
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“She came into the maternity ward after Lily was born.””
“That’s impossible.””
“She had permission.””
“From who?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Your husband.””
I looked at Mark.
He shook his head immediately.
“No.””
Rachel continued.
“Mark told staff she was family and that there was a misunderstanding with the paperwork.””
My hands started trembling.
“Why would he do that?””
“I don’t know.””
“Did he take Lily?””
“No.””
That surprised me.
“Then who did?””
Rachel hesitated.
“Your mother-in-law.””
I felt sick.
“She took my baby?””
“Only for eleven minutes.””
“Only?””
My voice cracked.
“Rachel, I had just given birth.””
“I know.””
“Do you understand what those eleven minutes felt like?””
The line went quiet.
Then Rachel said softly:
“I know because I was the one who brought Lily back.””
I sat down.
The room felt like it was shrinking.
“What happened during those minutes?””
Rachel sighed.
“I don’t know everything.””
“Tell me what you know.””
“I saw Linda carrying Lily into the hallway.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed to confirm something.””
“Confirm what?””
Rachel paused.
Then whispered:
“She said she needed to know if Lily had the right blood type.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I didn’t understand at the time.””
“Why would she care?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at Mark.
His face had changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“Mark,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“What did your mother know?””
He didn’t answer.
Rachel heard him.
“Is Mark there?””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Yes.””
Another pause.
“Then he already knows.””
The room went silent.
“What does he know?””
Rachel’s voice became softer.
“Your husband was told before Lily was born that there was a possibility the baby wasn’t biologically related to him.””
I stared at Mark.
“What?””
He closed his eyes.
“Chloe…”
“No.””
I stood.
“No, don’t say my name.””
My voice shook.
“You knew?””
He looked devastated.
“I was confused.””
“You knew there was a possibility?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me raise her without telling me?””
“I loved her.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He stepped closer.
“I loved you too.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Then why didn’t you trust me with the truth?””
He had no response.
Because there wasn’t one.
Rachel continued.
“There’s something else.””
I looked back at the phone.
“What?””
“The paperwork Linda changed.””
My heart raced.
“What about it?””
“She didn’t remove someone from the records.””
“Then what did she change?””
Rachel whispered:
“She added someone.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
The nurse hesitated.
Then:
“Another father’s name.””
The room became silent.
Megan suddenly stepped forward.
“Turn that off.””
I looked at her.
“You know.””
She didn’t answer.
“You know whose name is on that record.””
Mark looked at her.
“Megan.””
For the first time, Megan looked afraid.
Then Rachel said:
“Chloe, you need to know something.””
“What?””
“The man listed on that original record…”
I held my breath.
“Wasn’t Mark.””
My fingers went numb.
“Who was it?””
Rachel’s voice trembled.
“It was someone who was in that hospital that night.””
The call ended.
Not because I hung up.
Because Rachel disconnected.
I stared at my phone.
Then I looked at Mark.
“Who was there?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Megan whispered:
“Chloe…”
I turned toward her.
May you like
And the fear in her face told me everything.
She knew the answer.
