Chapter 8: The Name I Never Expected

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was angry.

Anger would have been easier.

I was awake because my entire history had started collapsing.

Every memory.

Every moment.

Every conversation.

I questioned everything.

The first ultrasound.

The day Lily was born.

The nights Mark stayed awake holding her.

Was any of it real?

At sunrise, Zoe found me sitting on the floor beside Lily’s bed.

“You didn’t sleep.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She sat beside me.

“What happened?””

I looked at my daughter.

Then whispered:

“Mark isn’t Lily’s biological father.””

Zoe went completely still.

“What?””

I told her everything.

The message.

The test.

Megan’s phone call.

When I finished, Zoe looked furious.

“They knew for five years?””

I nodded.

“Why?””

“That’s what I don’t understand.””

Zoe looked toward Lily.

“Does Lily know?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I nodded.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Mark.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

I stared at it.

Zoe noticed.

“Are you going?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I need answers.””

I left Lily with Zoe and drove back to the house.

Mark was waiting.

But something had changed.

The confidence was gone.

He looked exhausted.

“I know you’re angry.””

I didn’t answer.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“Of losing her.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you tried to take her away?””

“No.””

“That’s exactly what you were doing.””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know how else to handle it.””

“Five years, Mark.””

“I loved her.””

“You loved her, but you lied to her mother.””

He sat down.

“I thought if I stayed quiet, eventually it wouldn’t matter.””

“It always mattered.””

He looked at me.

“Do you know why I never told you?””

I folded my arms.

“Tell me.””

He took a deep breath.

“Because I knew who the father was.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

Mark looked toward the window.

Then said:

“Someone you trusted.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Mark.””

His voice dropped.

“It was someone in your family.””

I felt dizzy.

“What?””

He finally looked at me.

“The person who was with you the night before we got engaged.””

I froze.

Because I knew exactly what he meant.

There was only one person.

One person I had spent years defending.

One person who had sat across from me at Thanksgiving.

One person who had held Lily as a baby.

“No.””

Mark whispered:

“Chloe…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“Don’t say it.””

His face was full of guilt.

“The father is…”

The doorbell rang.

We both turned.

Neither of us expected anyone.

Mark walked toward the door.

I followed.

When he opened it, my blood ran cold.

Because standing there was Megan.

But she wasn’t smiling.

She wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t pretending.

She looked terrified.

“Chloe,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

“What are you doing here?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Mark was never going to tell you the whole truth.””

Mark stepped forward.

“Megan, stop.””

She ignored him.

She looked directly at me.

“The father of Lily…”

She swallowed.

“…is not who you think.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Megan looked at Mark.

May you like

Then back at me.

“It means he lied about that too.””
