Chapter 3: The Custody Trap

I spent the night at Zoe’s apartment.

Lily slept beside me on the couch, her small hand wrapped around my finger.

I barely slept at all.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing.

Megan standing over my daughter.

Mark looking away.

And that sentence repeating in my head.

“She’s the reason we have to do this before Monday.””

At 6:17 the next morning, my phone lit up.

A message from Mark.

*Where are you? We need to talk.*

I stared at the screen.

No apology.

No question about Lily.

Not even:

*Is she okay?*

Just where are you.

I didn’t answer.

A minute later, another message appeared.

*You made a mistake last night. Don’t make it worse.*

I felt something inside me go cold.

Zoe walked into the room carrying two coffees.

“You got a message?””

I nodded.

She looked at my face.

“He still doesn’t know you saw the recording.””

“No.””

“Good.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because now we know he’s hiding something.””

I wanted to believe there was another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything.

But then I remembered Lily’s words.

Daddy wouldn’t believe me anyway.

I spent the next hour going through everything Zoe had found.

The email.

The recordings.

The strange calendar events on Mark’s tablet.

Then I saw it.

A meeting scheduled for Monday morning.

A family law office.

My name was written in the notes.

I stared at the screen.

“He was planning to take Lily away.””

Zoe sat beside me.

“Chloe…”

“No.””

I zoomed in.

There was another name attached.

A witness.

Someone who was supposed to describe my behavior.

Someone who claimed I was “emotionally unstable.””

My hands went numb.

“Megan.””

Zoe nodded.

“She was going to say you attacked her without reason.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“They planned this.””

“Yes.””

“Using Lily.””

Zoe looked away.

“I think so.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Lily was awake.

She rubbed her eyes and walked toward us.

“Mommy?””

I quickly closed the tablet.

“Good morning, sweetheart.””

She climbed onto my lap.

“Are we going home today?””

I froze.

Before I could answer, she asked:

“Is Daddy mad because Aunt Megan told him to be?””

Zoe and I exchanged a look.

I lowered my voice.

“What makes you think Aunt Megan told Daddy to be mad?””

Lily played with the sleeve of her pajamas.

“Because she told me.””

My heart stopped.

“When did she tell you that?””

“At Grandma’s house.””

“When?””

She looked confused.

“Before dinner.””

I felt a chill.

“Megan talked to you before dinner?””

Lily nodded.

“She told me I wasn’t supposed to touch the turkey.””

I swallowed.

“What else did she say?””

Lily’s eyes filled with fear.

“She said if I cried, Daddy would be angry at Mommy.””

I pulled her into my arms.

“Baby, why didn’t you tell me?””

She whispered:

“Because Aunt Megan said you’d make everything worse.””

I closed my eyes.

They hadn’t just planned to make me look angry.

They had prepared Lily.

They had scared a five-year-old child into silence.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me to answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke quietly.

“Is this Chloe Anderson?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Rachel. I work at the law office where your husband scheduled a consultation.””

My heart started pounding.

“Why are you calling me?””

Her voice dropped.

“Because after reviewing the information he provided, I think you need to know something.””

I stood up slowly.

“What?””

The woman hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your husband didn’t come to us to file for custody.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

A long silence followed.

May you like

And when she finally spoke, her words made my blood run cold.

“He came to ask how to remove you from your own daughter’s life.””
