Chapter 14: The Choice Lily Made

The divorce papers sat between us.

Two weeks before Thanksgiving.

Two weeks before the slap.

Two weeks before Mark looked me in the eyes and pretended he was trying to save our marriage.

He had already decided it was over.

He had already made plans.

I stared at the date.

“He was going to leave me.””

Ethan nodded.

“But he wanted custody first.””

I felt sick.

“He wanted to make sure I looked like the reason.””

“Yes.””

I picked up the papers.

The signature was real this time.

Mark’s.

Not mine.

“He was going to disappear with Lily.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The truth was already there.

Every piece.

Every lie.

Every betrayal.

I returned to Zoe’s apartment that evening.

Lily ran toward me the second I walked through the door.

“Mommy!””

I caught her.

Held her.

Held on longer than usual.

Because I finally understood something.

People had been fighting over her like she was a possession.

A prize.

A piece of evidence.

But she was a child.

A little girl who only wanted to feel safe.

“I missed you,” she whispered.

“I missed you too.””

She pulled back.

“Are you mad at Daddy?””

The question broke my heart.

Because even after everything…

She still loved him.

“I’m hurt,” I said honestly.

She looked down.

“Because I’m not his real daughter?””

I froze.

“Who told you that?””

She shrugged.

“I heard.””

I knelt in front of her.

“Lily, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“You are not a secret.””

Her eyes filled.

“You are not a mistake.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Then why did everyone hide me?””

I had no answer.

Not one that wouldn’t hurt her.

So I told her the truth that mattered.

“Because adults sometimes make bad choices.””

“Did I make a bad choice?””

“No.””

I held her face gently.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””

That night, Mark came to the apartment.

I almost didn’t open the door.

But Lily deserved answers.

He stood there looking broken.

“Can I see her?””

I stepped aside.

Lily ran to him.

And that hurt.

Because despite everything, she still loved the man who raised her.

Mark hugged her tightly.

“I’m sorry.””

She pulled back.

“Are you leaving?””

His face crumpled.

“No.””

“Are you my daddy?””

He looked at me.

Then back at her.

“I’m your dad.””

She frowned.

“That’s different.””

Mark swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Are you still my dad?””

He nodded.

“If you want me to be.””

Lily looked confused.

Then she asked:

“Why did you hurt Mommy?””

Mark closed his eyes.

And for once, he didn’t lie.

“Because I was scared.””

She looked at him.

“Being scared doesn’t mean you can hurt people.””

The room went silent.

Even Mark seemed shocked.

Because those were his words.

The same excuse he had used.

Now his five-year-old daughter was giving them back.

He started crying.

“I know.””

Later that night, after Lily fell asleep, Mark and I sat across from each other.

“I don’t expect forgiveness,” he said.

“Good.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

I looked at him.

“What happens now?””

“I’ll cooperate.””

“With what?””

“Everything.””

I studied his face.

“Why?””

He looked toward Lily’s room.

“Because I finally understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That loving her doesn’t mean owning her.””

For the first time in weeks, I believed he meant something.

But then my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Chloe, I need you to come to my office tomorrow.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because I found out who helped Mark create the fake evidence.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Rachel lowered her voice.

“The person who accessed your medical records before Lily was born.””

I looked at Mark.

Then at Lily’s bedroom door.

“Who?””

Rachel said one name.

And it wasn’t Megan.

It wasn’t my mother.

May you like

It was someone I never expected.

“Your doctor.””
